Another Earth? NASA confirms first planet that could support life, liquid water (Yahoo! News)

A day after the Pentagon acknowledged that an unmanned American reconnaissance drone went missing while on an operation in western Afghanistan late last week, Defense officials still smarting from the incident have come forward to dismiss Iranian claims that the drone was brought down by hostile activity. And American cyber experts similarly expressed skepticism over Iranian contentions that hackers based in Iran brought down the drone by penetrating its software or jamming its signals.

"The one thing I can tell you is we don't have any indications that the UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle], that we know we no longer have, was brought down by hostile activity of any kind," Pentagon spokesman Capt. John Kirby told reporters at a Pentagon press briefing Monday otherwise short of many further details on the embarrassing incident, ABC News's Luis Martinez reported. "As it says in the statement, the controllers lost control and, without getting into specific details, I think we're comfortable stating that there's no indication of hostile activity."

Likewise, the reported contention made by some Iranian military officials that an Iranian cyber-warfare unit commandeered the drone strains credulity, cyber-security expert James Lewis said.

"Iran hacking into the drone is as likely as an Ayatollah standing on a mountain-top and using thought waves to bring it down," Lewis, a former Reagan administration official now with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told Yahoo News by email Monday. "The most likely explanation is that it crashed on its own."

"If you could hack into a drone, you wouldn't use it for some spontaneous fun, you'd save it for a rainy day," Lewis continued. "You'd need to be able to hack either the control network in the U.S. or a satellite.? Neither is easy, and both are probably not something the Iranians can do."Read More ?

House panel votes to subpoena Corzine on MF Global

(AP) ? A congressional panel has subpoenaed former Sen. Jon Corzine to testify next week about his role leading MF Global, a brokerage firm that collapsed this fall after a disastrous bet on European debt.

The Dec. 8 hearing will be a rare moment in Washington. Congressional historians and Capitol Hill insiders can't recall another time when a former member of Congress was summoned by his former peers to testify about a matter under federal investigation.

The House Agriculture Committee voted Friday to issue the subpoena after Corzine failed to reply to an informal request to appear at the hearing.

Chairman Rep. Frank Lucas, R-Okla., said his testimony is "essential to fulfill our objectives."

Representatives for Corzine didn't immediately return telephone calls seeking comment.

MF Global filed for bankruptcy protection on Oct. 31. Corzine resigned as chairman and CEO a few days later. In just a week, stock investors lost an estimated $585 million.

Corzine has also been asked to testify later this month before two other panels, including the Senate Agriculture Committee. In that case, Corzine could face tough questions from former Senate colleagues.

Corzine, a Democrat, represented New Jersey in the U.S. Senate from 2001 to 2005. For two of those years, he led the committee that raised campaign money for Democrats seeking election to the Senate. He later served one term as New Jersey's governor before moving on to lead MF Global.

"It's a unique situation that Jon's in," said Abbe Lowell, a defense attorney who was counsel to the House of Representatives and whose clients have included former Sen. John Edwards and former Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons.

Regulators are looking into whether MF Global used money from customers' accounts for its own purposes as its financial condition worsened. That would violate securities rules. The FBI is investigating whether the firm violated any criminal laws.

An estimated $1.2 billion or more may be missing from customer accounts. Regulators say MF Global moved money out of customer accounts within days as the firm's cash dried up.

MF Global was one of the biggest players in the derivatives market. Derivatives are investments that are based on the value of an underlying asset, such as interest rates or oil prices.

No one at MF Global has been charged with a crime or civil violation.

Snagged!

Apologies if this isn't formal or protocol but I'm fairly new at this affair.

Almost two months ago I started my own roleplay in this site but 'Life' happened and I have left my roleplay unattended since then. It may as well be considered dead by all standards so the question is how do I get this roleplay back up and running again? Or is it to the point where it is doomed to be left in a roleplaying scrapyard?

I just need a little something to breath a little life back into it although I have pondered about "advertising" it in other forums but I'm not too sure if that is appropiate or not.

Thank you for your time.

Jesse Eisenberg sues studio over "Camp Hell" advertising (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? After "The Social Network"s' endless scenes of depositions, Jesse Eisenberg should have a pretty firm grounding in the legal system.

That might come in handy.

Last week, the Oscar nominee hit Lionsgate and Grindstone Entertainment with a $3 million lawsuit, charging the companies with falsely advertising his cameo in "Camp Hell" as a lead role in the low-budget horror film.

The "Zombieland" star claims that in 2007 he agreed to spend one day filming a small part in the film as a favor to friends. In a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, he says that he received only minimal compensation for his work.

Yet, art for the film's DVD jacket trades heavily on Eisenberg's minimal work, featuring a large photo of his face and his name above the title.

"Eisenberg's reputation and good will with the public and his fans will be severely harmed if they are duped into purchasing a copy of the 'Camp Hell' DVD as a result of false advertising by defendants that it is a horror film starring Jesse Eisenberg," the complaint reads. "Eisenberg's fans and the public should be protected from defendants' fraudulent conduct and false advertising and unfair business practices."

A spokesperson for Lionsgate declined to comment.

Eisenberg is alleging misappropriation of right of publicity, quantum merit (a legal phrase meaning reasonable value of services) and unfair business practices. He said that the studio is consciously trading on his recent film hits in an effort to sell the low-budget "Camp Hell."

The movie centers on a Bible camp that becomes demonically possessed. Bruce Davison stars as the priest in charge of the camp.

ICC deputy prosecutor Bensouda to get top job (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? The International Criminal Court's deputy prosecutor has edged out 51 other candidates to win the informal endorsement of the 119 countries that support the tribunal to be the next chief prosecutor.

Liechtenstein's U.N. Ambassador Christian Wenaweser, president of the tribunal's Assembly of States Parties, told the Associated Press that the countries concluded informal consultations Wednesday. He said they agreed that 51-year-old Gambian lawyer Fatou Bensouda should succeed Luis Moreno Ocampo, whose nine-year term expires in 2012.

Wenaweser said that at an informal meeting of the 119 countries on Thursday, he will ask that Bensouda be formally elected on Dec. 12.

The International Criminal Court, which began operating in 2002, is the world's first permanent war crimes tribunal.

Unlocking the genetic and molecular mystery of soft-tissue sarcoma

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2011) ? Scientists at Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston have uncovered important molecular and genetic keys to the development of soft-tissue sarcomas in skeletal muscle, giving researchers and clinicians additional targets to stop the growth of these often deadly tumors.

Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the study identified two major molecular signaling pathways (the Ras and mTOR pathways) that are common in tumor growth and development. These molecular pathways regulate cell growth and division, two cellular properties whose over-activation are hallmarks of cancer biology.

"In humans, some sarcomas respond to chemotherapy, says lead author Amy J. Wagers, PhD, an associate professor of stem cell and regenerative biology at Harvard Medical School and Joslin Diabetes Center, "but many don't. With these findings, we have vetted a list of new candidate targets whose inhibition may lead to regression of these tumors."

Many soft-tissue sarcomas, which develop in certain tissues such as bone and muscle, carry specific genetic mutations or unique gene signatures, which can allow scientists to develop more precise, targeted therapies. Wagers and her colleagues engineered a tumor system in mice by introducing into mouse skeletal muscle a cancer-carrying gene, or oncogene, known to cause tumors in humans. They used this engineered system to identify a small set of genes that are active in sarcoma tumors.

There are many different types of soft-tissue sarcomas, which develop in tissues that connect, support or surround other structures and organs, including muscle, tendons, nerves, fat and blood vessels. If diagnosed early, treatment, primarily through surgical removal of the tumor, radiation therapy or chemotherapy, can be effective. If the tumor has spread, however, the tumor can be controlled only for a period of time, but treatment does not often cure the disease.

By inducing these tumors in mice, Wagers says the scientists knew when the tumors would form in the mice and where in the body they would develop, which helped them better understand the molecular and genetic pathways underlying the disease. With this knowledge, researchers may be able to develop new intervention strategies that interfere with these genetic activities and stop the growth of this type of tumor.

"With the engineered system we developed, we can find new fragile points in the tumor to target," says first author Simone Hettmer, MD, a pediatric oncologist at the Dana-Farber/Children's Hospital Cancer Center, who treats children with these tumors. In addition, she adds, the system allows scientists to look at the genetic changes in sarcomas and how they interact with the development of tumors and can be applied to sarcomas in tissues other than skeletal muscle.

Surprisingly, says Wagers, the researchers found they could induce tumors using several different 'beginning' cells. The scientists generated tumor cells using stem cell-like cells that go on to make either muscle or other connective tissues. Tumors that develop from muscle cells were rhabdomyosarcomas, the most common form of soft-tissue sarcoma seen in children, while tumors that developed from non-muscle cells represented other types of sarcoma.

Wagers and her colleagues are now working on establishing a similar engineered model using human cells to test the effectiveness of anti-sarcoma medications. These preclinical experiments are designed to identify the most promising candidates for the treatment of soft-tissue sarcoma that ultimately will be pursued in human clinical trials. Early studies have identified several chemical compounds that, in cell cultures at least, appear to slow the growth of sarcoma cells.

In addition to Wagers and Hettmer, other Joslin co-authors of the study were Jianing Liu, Christine Miller, and Melissa Lindsay, as well as Cynthia Sparks and David Guertin of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Roderick Bronson of the Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, and David Langenau of Massachusetts General Hospital.
