Gabon expects 7 pct GDP growth in 2013-Econmin

LONDON (Reuters) - Gabon's economy will expand by 7 percent in 2013, supported by double-digit growth in the non-oil sector, the energy-exporting country's economy minister told Reuters.

"We have 7 percent for three years - 2011, 2012, 2013," Luc Oyoubi said on Thursday.

"For 2013, we think that oil will decline, but non-oil GDP will certainly be very high. Still more than 10 percent."

That estimate is far more optimistic than the one given by the International Monetary Fund, which last month predicted Gabon's economic growth slowing to 2.3 percent next year from an expected 5.6 percent in 2012.

Oyoubi however said the non-oil economy was expanding strongly thanks to the government's infrastructure programme which includes building roads and housing and he said that would push overall growth to 7 percent.

Gabon issued a $1 billion Eurobond in 2007, one of the few sub-Saharan African countries to do so, but the minister said the government had not yet decided whether to return to global capital markets next year.

Oil accounts for 45 percent of the former OPEC member's GDP. With an estimated population of just 1.5 million, Gabon has one of Africa's highest per capital GDP levels.

Gabon's energy minister told Reuters on Thursday that oil production would rise next year to 230,000 barrels per day.

10 Surprising Work from Home Jobs |

When people think of work from home jobs, several ?typical? job types come to mind: customer service, information technology, and blogging just to name a few. But over the last decade,?telecommuting jobs?have grown 41%, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and the variety of jobs that can be done from home is quite surprising.

Here are ten real work from home jobs that you may not have thought about before. And if you don?t see a job that sparks your interest on this list, keep in mind that if your work is mainly done using computers, phones, or other means of remote communication, it can probably be done from home too.

Registered Nurse Clinical Case Manager?- Nursing jobs are a growing telecommuting option and in this role, the job seeker would be responsible for assessing the health of insurance program members and providing care planning activities and services.

High School Teacher?- Virtual high schools, both public and alternative, have grown leaps and bounds over the last few years. Certified teachers in subjects like English, Spanish, Science, Sociology, Special Education, and even Physical Education are needed to fill a large number of rolls.

Principal Scientist?- No longer are scientists confined to laboratories. With advancements in technology, scientists can now find work from home jobs where they?ll analyze clinical data, design components, train staff, review documentation and attend client meetings.

Independent Filmmaker?- Content websites are increasingly turning to short videos to capture readers? attention. Experienced independent filmmakers can find flexible schedule positions working remotely producing short films on a variety of topics.

Legal Advocacy Counsel?- Depending on one?s specialized legal area of expertise, lawyers can find telecommuting jobs where they?ll provide legal research, writing, and consultations for organizations and companies, all from the comfort of a home office.

Medical Director?- For those with medical or veterinary doctorate degrees, organizations are hiring telecommuting medical directors. These roles entail managing direct reports in the field, producing reports, and providing training.

Government Manager?- Federal government departments and agencies have been increasing their telecommuting opportunities over the last two years. Professionals interested in working for the U.S. government can find jobs in the Federal Highway Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency, and others. Job titles include Senior Counsel, Program Manager, Analyst, Transportation Specialist, and Director.

Translation and Subtitler?- If you have the ability to speak and write in multiple languages, plenty of telecommuting jobs exist for you. Film and video companies need people to translate foreign language films into English and to write subtitles, as do publishers and websites. Fluency is required for this work from home job.

Personal Historian?- The popularity of family history research has grown into its own industry. For people who love speaking with people, doing historical research, and recording personal stories, telecommuting personal historian jobs are an excellent choice.

Therapist?- Licensed clinical social workers and psychologists can find work-from-home jobs counseling clients. Rather than a traditional office setting, telecommuting therapists use video chat and phone to communicate with and assist clients.

If you?ve been interested in working from home but aren?t sure if your career field translates into a telecommuting role, you?re in luck. As technology advances and employers continue to discover the perks of hiring telecommuting employees, more and more career fields will become telecommute-eligible.

Brie Weiler Reynolds wrote this guest post. She?s the Content and Social Media Director at?FlexJobs, the award-winning site for telecommuting and flexible job listings, and a former career advisor. At FlexJobs, Brie offers job seekers career and work-life balance advice through the?FlexJobs Blog?and social media.

Developing Your Small Business Marketing Plan

Along with your business plan, your small business marketing plans is only of the most important long-term plans you'll make for your small business. Some small business owners choose to ignore that advice, instead preferring to fly by the seat of their pants, so to speak, to "wing it." While some of those small business owners are successful, they're not nearly as successful as they could be had they laid out a well-defined small business marketing plan.

Garber says Beckham 'overdelivered' to MLS

By RONALD BLUM

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:57 a.m. ET Nov. 27, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) -David Beckham did everything Major League Soccer asked of him to grow football in the United States during his 5 1/2 seasons with the Los Angeles Galaxy, league commissioner Don Garber said on Monday.

Beckham plays his final competitive match for the Galaxy on Saturday in the MLS Cup final against Houston.

When Beckham left Real Madrid in 2007 to sign a $32.5 million, five-year deal with the Galaxy, he said he wanted to win and increase the league's popularity both domestically and abroad. The Galaxy won last year's title and are in the final for the third time in four years.

"I don't think anybody would doubt that he has overdelivered on every one of those measures," Garber said during a telephone conference call, his annual state of the league session as commissioner. "There's arguably not a soccer fan on this planet that doesn't know the LA Galaxy and Major League Soccer, and David played a significant role in helping us make that happen. He was an unbelievable ambassador for the league, for the Galaxy."

The league's regular season attendance average increased from 15,504 in 2006 to 17,872 in 2011 and a record 18,807 this year. After Beckham's arrival, the league announced expansion teams that started play in San Jose (2008), Seattle (2009), Philadelphia (2010), Vancouver and Portland (2011), and Montreal (2012), increasing the total to 19.

Ground was also broken for football-specific stadiums in Houston, Kansas City and Philadelphia, the long-delayed venue in New Jersey was completed, and extensive renovations took place in Montreal, Portland and Vancouver. Television exposure improved, but only slightly.

"We needed David Beckham in 2007 to help drive our credibility, to help grow our popularity and to show the world really that the United States ... was ready to support a division-one league," Garber said. "We don't need anything today to get us to the next level. It's a wide variety of initiatives, from player development, from continued investment in our overall player pool, to better and more focused marketing, to smart expansion to a transformation into a digital world where our games are even more available than they are today."

Thierry Henry, Rafa Marquez, Robbie Keane and Tim Cahill have followed Beckham to MLS. Given a chance to leave, Beckham stayed for 2013 in a deal that guaranteed him another $4 million. The 37-year-old former England captain said last week he was departing "to experience one last challenge."

"I don't believe we're going to be hurting when David leaves," Garber said. "The Michael Jordans and Wayne Gretzkys of the world, the Magic Johnsons, they have a great impact on taking a league to a higher level. And then if managed properly, the league and the clubs and the players that are still in the league are able to take that mantle and take it even higher."

Beckham's deal included the right to buy a future expansion team at a discounted price. Garber said only the New York market was excluded.

Denver-based Anschutz Co. said in September it was starting a process to sell its Anschutz Entertainment Group subsidiary, which owns the Galaxy and several other sports properties.

"There is a possibility for him to work with the league office to find ways to transfer, I guess, that option into an opportunity in LA," Garber said. "Way too premature to talk about that or even speculate about what that would look like, but that opportunity does exist if it meets the approval of the league, who in essence holds that value; David, who holds the option; and the Los Angeles Galaxy, who would have to be part of that discussion."

Graphene/nanotube hybrid makes single-surface material for energy storage, electronics

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? A seamless graphene/nanotube hybrid created at Rice University may be the best electrode interface material possible for many energy storage and electronics applications.

Led by Rice chemist James Tour, researchers have successfully grown forests of carbon nanotubes that rise quickly from sheets of graphene to astounding lengths of up to 120 microns, according to a paper published November 27 by Nature Communications. A house on an average plot with the same aspect ratio would rise into space.

That translates into a massive amount of surface area, the key factor in making things like energy-storing supercapacitors.

The Rice hybrid combines two-dimensional graphene, which is a sheet of carbon one atom thick, and nanotubes into a seamless three-dimensional structure. The bonds between them are covalent, which means adjacent carbon atoms share electrons in a highly stable configuration. The nanotubes aren't merely sitting on the graphene sheet; they become a part of it.

"Many people have tried to attach nanotubes to a metal electrode and it's never gone very well because they get a little electronic barrier right at the interface," Tour said. "By growing graphene on metal (in this case copper) and then growing nanotubes from the graphene, the electrical contact between the nanotubes and the metal electrode is ohmic. That means electrons see no difference, because it's all one seamless material.

"This gives us, effectively, a very high surface area of more than 2,000 square meters per gram of material. It's a huge number," said Tour, Rice's T.T. and W.F. Chao Chair in Chemistry as well as a professor of mechanical engineering and materials science and of computer science and a co-author with former postdoctoral researcher and lead author Yu Zhu, now an assistant professor at the University of Akron.

Tour said proof of the material's hybrid nature lies in the seven-membered rings at the transition from graphene to nanotube, a structure predicted by theory for such a material and now confirmed through electron microscope images with subnanometer resolution.

Carbon has no peer as a conductive material in such a thin and robust form, especially in the form of graphene or certain types of nanotubes. Combining the two appears to offer great potential for electronic components like fast supercapacitors that, because of the massive surface area, may hold a great deal of energy in a tiny package.

Rice chemist Robert Hauge and his team made the first steps toward such a hybrid over the past decade. Hauge, a distinguished faculty fellow in chemistry at Rice and co-author of the new work, discovered a way to make densely packed carpets of nanotubes on a carbon substrate by suspending catalyst-laced flakes in a furnace. When heated, the catalyst built carbon nanotubes like skyscrapers, starting at the substrate and working their way up. In the process, they lifted the aluminum oxide buffer into the air. The whole thing looked like a kite with many strings and was dubbed an odako, like the giant Japanese kites.

In the new work, the team grew a specialized odako that retained the iron catalyst and aluminum oxide buffer but put them on top of a layer of graphene grown separately on a copper substrate. The copper stayed to serve as an excellent current collector for the three-dimensional hybrids that were grown within minutes to controllable lengths of up to 120 microns.

Electron microscope images showed the one-, two- and three-walled nanotubes firmly embedded in the graphene, and electrical testing showed no resistance to the flow of current at the junction.

"The performance we see in this study is as good as the best carbon-based supercapacitors that have ever been made," Tour said. "We're not really a supercapacitor lab, and still we were able to match the performance because of the quality of the electrode. It's really remarkable, and it all harkens back to that unique interface."

Investor sues HP over Autonomy deal

2 hrs.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Hewlett-Packard was sued on Monday by an investor who claimed the company knew statements about its Autonomy acquisition were misleading and led the stock to fall, according to lawyers representing the plaintiff.

The proposed class action lawsuit was filed in a San Francisco federal court.

HP dropped a bombshell last Tuesday with an $8.8 billion write-down on its acquisition of British software firm Autonomy, saying the company inflated sales with improper accounting. Autonomy co-founder Mike Lynch has denied any wrongdoing.

HP bought Autonomy for a hefty $11.1 billion last year. HP has said it alerted regulators on both sides of the Atlantic.

The lawsuit, one of the first to be filed by investors on the Autonomy mess, said HP hid the fact it gained control of Autonomy based on financial statements that could not be relied upon. It also said that HP had not revealed to investors that it tried to undo the Autonomy agreement before it closed because of the accounting issues.?

Bangladeshis protest after fire that killed 112

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) ? Thousands of Bangladeshi workers demanding justice after a garment-factory fire killed at least 112 people are blocking the streets of a Dhaka suburb in a protest that has turned violent at times.

Angry workers on Monday threw stones at factories, smashed vehicles and blocked a major highway in the area. Some 200 factories were closed for the day after the protest erupted in Savar, the industrial zone where Saturday's deadly fire occurred.

Officials say many workers were trapped in the eight-story building, which lacked emergency exits. Firefighters have pulled out at least 100 bodies, and 12 more people died at hospitals after jumping from the building.

Unions in Bangladesh have long complained about unsafe factories where workers work in dismal sweatshop conditions.

Civil rights leader Lawrence Guyot dies at 73

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Lawrence Guyot, a civil rights leader who survived jailhouse beatings in the Deep South in the 1960s and went on to encourage generations to get involved, has died. He was 73.

Guyot had a history of heart problems and suffered from diabetes, and died at home in Mount Rainier, Md., his daughter Julie Guyot-Diangone said late Saturday. She said he died sometime Thursday night; other media reported he passed away Friday.

A Mississippi native, Guyot (pronounced GHEE-ott) worked for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and served as director of the 1964 Freedom Summer Project, which brought thousands of young people to the state to register blacks to vote despite a history of violence and intimidation by authorities. He also chaired the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, which sought to have blacks included among the state's delegates to the 1964 Democratic National Convention. The bid was rejected, but another civil rights activist, Fannie Lou Hamer, addressed the convention during a nationally televised appearance.

Guyot was severely beaten several times, including at the notorious Mississippi State Penitentiary known as Parchman Farm. He continued to speak on voting rights until his death, including encouraging people to cast ballots for President Barack Obama.

"He was a civil rights field worker right up to the end," Guyot-Diangone said.

Guyot participated in the 40th anniversary of the Freedom Summer Project to make sure a new generation could learn about the civil rights movement.

"There is nothing like having risked your life with people over something immensely important to you," he told The Clarion-Ledger in 2004. "As Churchill said, there's nothing more exhilarating than to have been shot at ? and missed."

His daughter said she recently saw him on a bus encouraging people to register to vote and asking about their political views. She said he was an early backer of gay marriage, noting that when he married a white woman, interracial marriage was illegal in some states. He met his wife Monica while they both worked for racial equality.

"He followed justice," his daughter said. "He followed what was consistent with his values, not what was fashionable. He just pushed people along with him."

Susan Glisson, executive director of the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation at the University of Mississippi, called Guyot "a towering figure, a real warrior for freedom and justice."

"He loved to mentor young people. That's how I met him," she said.

When she attended Ole Miss, students reached out to civil rights activists and Guyot responded.

"He was very opinionated," she said. "But always ? he always backed up his opinions with detailed facts. He always pushed you to think more deeply and to be more strategic. It could be long days of debate about the way forward. But once the path was set, there was nobody more committed to the path."

Glisson said Guyot's efforts helped lay the groundwork for the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

"Mississippi has more black elected officials than any other state in the country, and that's a direct tribute to his work," she said.

Guyot was born in Pass Christian, Miss., on July 17, 1939. He became active in civil rights while attending Tougaloo College in Mississippi, and graduated in 1963. Guyot received a law degree in 1971 from Rutgers University, and then moved to Washington, where he worked to elect fellow Mississippian and civil rights activist Marion Barry as mayor in 1978.

"When he came to Washington, he continued his revolutionary zeal," Barry told The Washington Post on Friday. "He was always busy working for the people."

Guyot worked for the District of Columbia government in various capacities and as a neighborhood advisory commissioner.

D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton told The Post in 2007 that she first met Guyot within days of his beating at a jail in Winona, Miss. "Because of Larry Guyot, I understood what it meant to live with terror and to walk straight into it," she told the newspaper. On Friday, she called Guyot "an unsung hero" of the civil rights movement.

"Very few Mississippians were willing to risk their lives at that time," she said. "But Guyot did."

In recent months, his daughter said he was concerned about what he said were Republican efforts to limit access to the polls. As his health was failing, he voted early because he wanted to make sure his vote was counted, he told the AFRO newspaper.

Funeral services are pending.

PFT: Vick getting better? |? Eagles' D has issues

sb-barnesAP

At at time when plenty of teams seem to be unable or unwilling to spot concussions until the game in which the injury was sustained is over, the Giants are in the small minority of teams that take extra steps to identify whether a player needs to be evaluated after taking a blow to the head.

?[T]he athletic trainers are spread out over the field, the doctors are spread out on the field, and so we?re now communicating through earpieces and radios,? Giants head trainer and senior V.P. of medical services Ronnie Barnes told Steve Serby of the New York Post. ??We?re being ? I?d like to say more vigilant ? in looking at the field, and making sure we?re not missing anything. ?We alert each other that we?ve seen something, and I think that?s been very helpful.?

Barnes said that perhaps four or five teams use that many people to spot possible concussions.

?[I]t?s been really helpful to me because I?m not running back and forth, because I can be down working with a player, and another player could go down,? Barnes said.

And when the Giants think someone may have suffered a concussion, the Giants don?t mess around with a cursory sideline exam performed in the elements and the noise and the confusion of the sidelines.

?Generally speaking, if we decide that a player has been concussed or has concussion symptoms, we take them inside,? Barnes said. ?And inside, we have an iPad, with a sideline assessment tool, which then documents all of the symptoms within minutes after they were removed from the field, and it also includes a balance test, which then we can look at during the week, to say, ?This is where he was during the game, and this is where he is on Thursday, on Friday, on Saturday.??

It?s a great approach. ?It?s the right approach. ?So the question now becomes why aren?t the other 27 or 28 teams doing the same thing?

While we completely agree with the NFLPA?s repeated requests for the use of independent neurologists during games, the biggest challenge for the NFL when it comes to concussions is striking the balance between removing from play those who has suffered concussions while also not removing from action during a key stretch of a game a player who ultimately is deemed to be fine.

?I?m a caretaker of the game with respect to sports medicine, because of Wellington Mara, and because we?re a flagship team in this league,? Barnes said, ?and I think it?s our responsibility to continue to be flagship, not only on the field, but in medicine.?

It?s not the product of a recent epiphany. ?Barnes explained that the Giants always have been ahead of the curve when it comes to concussions.

?I?d like to think that we?ve always had here at the Giants a high level of suspicion for concussion, and that we were conservative,? Barnes said. ??Lawrence Taylor, we actually used to hide his helmet when he got concussed. And he?d be looking for his helmet. Anybody who had a concussion, we would take their helmet so they couldn?t return to the game.?

If the current approach is good enough for the team that has won two of the last five Super Bowls, it should be good enough for everyone else. ?The NFL should study the Giants? approach, and the NFL should make it mandatory for every other team.

New corruption scandal rocks Brazilian government

BRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, moving quickly to nip a new scandal in the bud, ordered the dismissal on Saturday of government officials allegedly involved in a bribery ring, including the country's deputy attorney general.

Federal police raided government offices in Brasilia and Sao Paulo on Friday and arrested six people for running an influence peddling ring that sold government approvals to businessmen in return for bribes.

Among those under investigation are the former personal secretary of ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Rosemary de Noronha, who has headed the regional office of the presidency in Sao Paulo since 2005.

The bribery scandal erupted on the heels of Brazil's biggest political corruption trial that sentenced some of Lula's closest aides to prison terms for buying support in Congress for his minority Workers' Party government after taking office in 2003.

Rousseff, Lula's chosen successor, was not affected by the vote-buying scandal and she has built on his popularity by gaining a reputation for not tolerating corruption. But the ruling Workers' Party was rocked by the scandal which tarnished Lula's legacy even though he was not implicated.

The new corruption case could further hurt the standing of Lula, who remains Brazil's most influential politician.

Friday's arrests included two brothers who were recommended for positions in the federal government by Lula's former secretary, Noronha: Paulo Rodrigues Vieira, director of the National Water Agency and Rubens Carlos Vieira, director for airport infrastructure at Brazil's Civil Aviation Agency.

Police accused the brothers of recruiting second-tier government employees who would be open to bribery, while a third brother also under arrest, Marcelo Rodrigues Vieira, contacted businessmen willing to pay for false or speeded-up approvals.

Police have been investigating the bribery ring since 2010 when an official in the government accounting office who was offered $150,000 for a favorable report got cold feet, returned the money he had been paid and blew the whistle.

Early on Friday, police seized computers and data from the Brasilia office of Deputy Attorney General Jose Weber de Holanda Alves, who has been dismissed and is under investigation along with a dozen other people, including a former senator.

"By presidential decision, all the government employees under investigation by the Federal Police will be dismissed or fired from their positions," a statement form Rousseff's office said. She ordered all agencies mentioned in the police probe to open internal investigations.

Police are investigating possible bribery cases at several other federal agencies, including the Ministry of Education.

While Noronha served as chief of staff of the president's regional office in Sao Paulo, Rousseff had inherited her as a Lula appointee.

Veja news magazine reported that Noronha, who was very close to Lula and traveled with him abroad when he was president, received bribes for influence peddling that included a luxury cruise trip and plastic surgery.

World stocks meander as US, Japan observe holiday

BANGKOK (AP) ? World stock markets saw little movement Friday amid holidays in the U.S. and Japan, although traders kept an eye on Americans hitting the stores for the start of the biggest shopping season of the year.

"It often provides a first glimpse at the strength of consumer spending in holiday season," Michael Carey of Credit Agricole CIB said in a market commentary. "Many industry analysts expect the gains to be centered in the consumer electronics sector."

The day is dubbed "Black Friday" because it falls on the day after Thanksgiving and is when U.S. retailers traditionally turn a profit as millions of Americans rush out to stores in search of gifts for Christmas and other celebrations.

European stocks were nearly unchanged in early trading. Britain's FTSE 100 edged marginally higher to 5,792.21. Germany's DAX was flat at 7,243.52. France's CAC-40 was less than 0.1 percent up at 3,498.48.

Wall Street prepared to open for a half-session after Thursday's Thanksgiving holiday. Dow Jones industrial futures rose 0.3 percent to 12,836 while S&P 500 futures gained 0.3 percent to 1,391.80.

In Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index rose 0.8 percent to 21,913.98 and South Korea's Kospi added 0.6 percent to 1,911.33. Benchmarks in Taiwan, mainland China and the Philippines also rose. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 was nearly unchanged at 4,413. Benchmarks in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand fell.

A manufacturing survey that showed China's manufacturing grew for the first time in 13 months in November helped boost global stock markets on Thursday. The gains in Europe came despite a survey showing that the combined economy of the 17 countries that use the euro remains in recession.

Over recent weeks, the focus of attention has been on two main issues ? whether the White House can come to a deal with Congress on the budget and whether Greece will get its next batch of bailout cash.

Though a deal on either front has yet to be achieved, investors remain confident that their worst fears ? a U.S. recession and a Greek exit from the euro ? will be averted.

A U.S. budget deal is expected to be achieved to avoid automatic tax increases and spending cuts at the start of next year, while observers say Greece will likely get approval for the release of the money it needs to avoid bankruptcy at a meeting in Brussels on Monday.

"Should both events be concluded successfully, one can only assume we will be in for a good run into the end of the year and possibly get back to the levels we were trading in the lead up to the US presidential elections," said Stan Shamu of IG Markets in Melbourne.

Benchmark oil for January delivery was down 13 cents to $87.25 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 63 cents to finish at $87.38 a barrel on Wednesday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2880 from $1.2825 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar fell to 82.14 yen from 82.49 yen.

Wild turkeys overrun Massachusetts town

Nov 22, 2012 5:19pm

ht wild turkeys mi 121122 wblog Wild Turkeys Overrun Brookline, Mass.

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? (Image Credit: Jocelyn Guggenheim)

Wild turkeys have been a strange but common sight in suburban and even urban areas in metropolitan Boston for some time, but some residents of nearby Brookline say the birds are becoming more common and increasingly aggressive in their town.

Emily Spieler, a Brookline resident for eight years, told ABCnews.com that it wasn?t until around two years ago that she and her husband saw a turkey in their neighborhood.

?And there were a couple of them,? Spieler said. ?In our backyard.?

Spieler described the area where she lives as the urban and densely settled end of Brookline, very close to the center of Boston.

Brookline police say complaints about wild turkeys in the town have doubled in the past two months, according to CBS Boston. One officer said he spends nearly every morning protecting students at Brookline High School from the turkeys.

?I?ve had them come after me,? Brookline resident Jocelyn Guggenheim told ABCnews.com. ?I cross the street to avoid them and I?ve never done that around a wild animal, even though I grew up in the woods.?

Guggenheim said the birds often crowd sidewalks and both she and Spieler said the turkeys have caused several traffic jams by grouping together in the middle of busy intersections.

Massachusetts has an obvious connection to the turkey. It was in the commonwealth where the Pilgrims landed and later held the first Thanksgiving. Accounts vary on whether the Pilgrims and Native Americans shared turkey that day, but species meleagris gallopavo was hunted out of existence in Massachusetts by the mid-19th century.

Successful reintroduction efforts have brought the state?s fall turkey population to around 20,000 birds. And such population growth definitely shows as more and more people encounter the birds.

Towns around Boston are beginning to respond to the problem by holding town meetings and informational sessions and hoping to find a solution to the nuisance birds.

Experts agree that the best way to avoid a confrontation with a wild turkey is to steer clear of it if possible, to not be intimidated and spray water at the bird if available.

Bankruptcy Tips For Helping You Survive Successfully | Siben ...

TIP! It can be difficult to obtain unsecured credit once you have filed for bankruptcy. Since it is important that you work to rebuild your credit, you should instead think about applying for a secured card.

It can be very complicated to file for personal bankruptcy. Different bankruptcy filing types are available, and the right one for you will depend on the kinds of debts you have and your overall financial picture. Before you decide to file for personal bankruptcy, you need to educate yourself about it. Check out the tips listed below if you want some solid info on the subject.

TIP! If you intending to file bankruptcy, do not transfer any of your assets over to someone else within 12 months of filing. This will be perceived as an attempt to conceal your assets, and could lead to your case being dismissed.

If you intend to file bankruptcy soon, you may want to discontinue paying all debts. Bankruptcy rules generally outlaw repayment of creditors in the 90 days leading up to a bankruptcy filing, a period that is extended to one year when it comes to payments made to family members. Know the laws prior to deciding what you are going to do.

TIP! When you are filing for bankruptcy, make sure you list all of the financial information you may have. If the court thinks you are attempting to conceal information, your petition could be denied.

Do not delay the bankruptcy filing if it has become a necessary reality. If this is the only option that you could take, waiting won?t make it better. Delaying the process will only add to your anxieties, and your financial position can get worse, too. This can lead to numerous adverse consequences in your life. When you file sooner, you?ll do a lot better.

TIP! If you are moving forward with a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, you need to learn how that can negatively affect anyone who shares loans with you. Once you have filed Chapter 7, you, by law, are not responsible for any of your debts that also include your co-debtor.

Look at all the alternatives to bankruptcy before filing. There are many recouses available to help you lower your payments and get back on track. Loan modification plans can help if you are dealing with foreclosure. Your lender can adjust your loan in many ways including extending the time you have to pay, reducing your interest rate, or canceling some of your late fees. At the end of the day, creditors want to get paid, and sometimes a debt repayment plan is preferable to dealing with a bankrupt debtor.

TIP! Engage in due diligence before you act. If you have decided to file for personal bankruptcy, you might be tempted to try doing it on your own, rather than paying an attorney.

Creditor conversations are common when you are moving towards a bankruptcy. Be sure to obtain copies of anything you agree to with your creditors. If creditors exhibit flexibility in dealing with you, this could have a positive impact on your debt discharge. Thus, keeping records is key!

TIP! Make sure that you act at the appropriate time. Timing is very important when it comes to personal bankruptcy filings.

Filing for bankruptcy is something many people are forced to do when there debts become too much of a burden, and they can no longer afford to pay them. If you have unmanageable debt, you need to familiarize yourself with regional bankruptcy laws. Each state has their own bankruptcy laws. Some states may protect you home, and some may not. Be aware of bankruptcy laws before filing your claim.

TIP! Several months after discharge, get copies of credit reports from the big credit reporting agencies. Make sure that the report accurately represents your discharged debts and closed credit accounts.

If you acquire a new job prior to filing for bankruptcy, keep moving forward with your filing plans. It might still be wisest to file for bankruptcy. It can be very beneficial to file for bankruptcy. Should you file prior to earning your first paycheck, that money will not be considered when it comes to how you will repay.

TIP! You should not be embarrassed when filing for bankruptcy. A lot of people slip into depression and feel worthless because they lost control of their finances.

In order to avoid ruining your credit as much as possible, use bankruptcy only as a last resort. Lots of companies will settle for much less than the debt you owe, or at least come up with an affordable repayment solution. This is an option that saves money and can even help your credit rating. Another thing to consider before filing for bankruptcy are debt consolidation loans.

TIP! If filing for bankruptcy is stressing you out or getting you down, find an online support group to help you through the process. Filing for bankruptcy can make you feel extremely alienated, even from your close friends.

Bankruptcy can cause anxiety and a host of other physical and emotional issues. Engage a competent lawyer in order to avoid excess stress and keep everything on track. Don?t let cost be the sole factor in who you hire. While the person you select does not have to cost the most, they should be competent and reliable. Look to the bureau for better business, consultation, as well as others who have formerly experienced bankruptcy for more information about lawyers. Try to get a referral from a trusted friend or family member.

TIP! If you are considering filing for personal bankruptcy, be certain that this is really the right course of action for you. Perhaps just consolidating some of your existing debt, could make them easier to manage.

You will now be aware that a good deal of thought should be applied before bankruptcy papers are filed. If you choose bankruptcy as a financial answer for your situation, you can only benefit from having a lawyer dedicated to this industry to help you out.

Mobile Cliff Coming For Retailers On Black Friday? (Keynote)
The 2012 holiday shopping season is anticipated to be the year for mobile, as large numbers of holiday shoppers use their smartphones for research and purchasing. But retailers may not be ready. Keynote predicts that slow site performance will leave many retailers and mobile shoppers crying in their eggnog.

  • Online retail sales are forecasted to be $68.4 billion, 15% over last year. (Forrester)
  • 20% of online sales predicted to come from mobile devices. (IMRG/Cap Gemini)
  • Four in five mobile device owners will use their devices in some way to assist with shopping. (Google/Ipsos)

Meanwhile a Keynote User Study found that user expectations for site performance across smartphones and tablets are high:

  • 64% of smartphone users want an under four second page download
  • 60% of tablet users want an under three second page download

So are online retailers ready to give the gift of mobile website performance and delight their customers looking to compare and buy online? Right now average response time is over 11 seconds.

Merry Mobile Shopping (Clickz)
From all appearances, it seems that Santa's sleigh bells are ringing in 2012 as the year that holiday shopping went mobile. In comparison to 2011, research is predicting that we'll be seeing twice as many consumers using their mobile devices to buy holiday gifts this year. It's no wonder. According to recent findings explored in the IAB's second annual Mobile Shoppers study, U.S. smartphone ownership took a sharp uptick since 2011, rising to 68% of consumers owning a smart mobile device versus 57% last year. And mobile shopping is on the rise. If Santa's sleigh bells can be heard around the globe, I think we can expect to hear the sounds of consumers collectively tapping on their mobile devices to make sure there is something under the tree.

Mobile Email Marketing: Tips For The Holiday Season (Marketing Land)
Even if you haven?t been able to transition your emails into a responsive template or you?re waiting to roll out that new mobile strategy in 2013, there are still a few mobile-smart techniques at your disposal:

  • Set to scale for iOS devices
  • Optimize your pre-header message
  • Prioritize for holiday shopping activity
  • Adjust for touch
  • Design for short attention spans
  • Make it easy to read

The holiday season can be a challenging time to try new things, but now you have a few simple tips to help your messages grab attention in the mobile inbox.

Effectively Measuring Lead Performance In Mobile Is Essential (Search Engine Watch)
If you?re like most digital marketers, you engage in advertising to achieve one of two goals ? either to generate or increase awareness or to generate new leads or customers. The metrics used to measure each of these goals vary dramatically, both in type and complexity. Lead measurement on the other hand is often very complex for the simple fact that every business measures them differently. Despite this fact, the most common metrics used in the digital world to measure this type of performance are clicks and calls. In mobile, there is a new engagement metric that is largely overlooked by marketers new to the space that is just as valuable, if not more valuable as a qualified lead measure, a call or completed forms: The access of map and driving directions. These actions are of great value, as the act of clicking through to view map and driving directions demonstrates a high level of user intent to convert through an offline visit to a store or business location.

SEO For The Mobile Web (Webdesigner Depot)
With the explosive expansion in the use of tablet computers and smartphones for web searches, why are so many SEO experts unable to look beyond desktop development? Is it because developers do not feel the need to duplicate their efforts, or does the answer lie in the clients? and employers? unwillingness to swallow the extra expense? If more users are searching for businesses while on the go through their smartphones, don?t we need a recommended practice for attracting them? Actually, there already is one: SEO. Google has already taken steps to consider how to rank pages tailored for smartphones. The mission of Googlebot-Mobile is "to increase ? coverage of smartphone content and to provide a better search experience for smartphone users." If you are planning a mobile specific version of your site, you must ensure that the content delivered is genuinely different from the desktop site.

Adoption Of Marketing Attribution Driven By Social And Mobile (Econsultancy)
The rise of social media and mobile usage has led to an increased interest in marketing attribution, according to the latest Econsultancy/Adobe Quarterly Digital Intelligence Briefing. The survey finds that marketing attribution has moved past the 'early adopter' phase, and is now used in some shape or form by the majority of respondents. The proliferation of mobile devices, and their potential to provide a link between online and offline, makes the task of attribution more difficult.?? Just under half (49%) of client-side respondents agree that mobile has increased the focus on marketing attribution, as they need to find ways to calculate the value of the channel.? Impact of mobile and social on attribution:

Econsultancy / Adobe

Social has also been instrumental in building the momentum of attribution marketing, with 58% of agency and 43% of client respondents agreeing that social media has increased focus on attribution.

Okan Kaya, Australian Gamer, Plays Call Of Duty For 135 Hours ...

Okan Kaya really likes Call of Duty.

The 28-year-old Australian and father of two demonstrated just how much he loves the first-person shooter game this week, playing more than 135 hours of Call of Duty, (unofficially) smashing the Guinness World Record for longest video game marathon ever. The feat, with very short periodic breaks, took seven days to complete.

Kaya's record broke the previous mark of 120 hours, 7 minutes, set in March by a Canadian duo playing the Sony Resistance series, Yahoo! reports.

A sales manager at Sydney-based online retailer 4Cabling by day, Kaya was aided in his record-breaking attempt by his boss, who let him play in an empty conference room, helped arrange for the light meals to keep up his strength and provided witnesses to document the event for Guinness authorities, according to the Australian Associated Press.

4Cabling's Facebook page has tracked the attempt all week.

According to Guinness regulations, players are allowed one 10-minute break each hour, Yahoo! notes, and Kaya was able to sleep for short periods by skipping several breaks and combining the times.

Still, this was no easy attempt.

"My hands were cramping up and I went through a lot of bandages," Kaya old the Australian Associated Press. "I even tried to 'pad up' my controller."

In fact, unsupervised video gaming marathons have ended in tragedy in the past.

According to Wired, a 20-year-old gamer from England died from a pulmonary embolism after a long gaming session. Similarly, a Taiwanese teen died this summer after a 40-hour "Diablo 3" marathon.

In order to try to prevent potentially fatal blood clots, Kaya occasionally used a small Stair Master while he was playing.

A Guinness spokesperson confirmed that Kaya had registered his attempt but said the evaluation process could take some time.

"While no Guinness World Records adjudicator was on site to verify, we await for Okan to send across all the necessary and required evidence across to in order for our records team to properly authenticate," the spokesperson told NBC News.

As for Kaya, he said while fun, this was going to be his last record attempt, at least for a while. "If I told the wife I had to go away for a week again and smash another record, she'd probably file for divorce," told the Australian Associated Press.
