2 new leads are tapped for Broadway's 'Annie'

NEW YORK (AP) ? Two 11-year-old actresses who have played orphans and been understudies in the Broadway revival of "Annie" have been picked to permanently take over from Lilla Crawford in the title role, a step up that has left them beaming.

Taylor Richardson and Sadie Sink, both natural redheads, will share the role of the stage's most famous redhead beginning July 30. Crawford's last performance is July 28.

"It's very exciting," said Sadie, who has played Annie before but not on Broadway. "It is a big step from an orphan to the title role." That's a sentiment that her smiling co-star agrees with: "Definitely."

Taylor, an actress from Richmond, Va., and Sadie, originally from Houston, have both understudied the role of Annie, and both have gone on as the orphan Duffy. "Annie" is their Broadway debuts.

"There's a big difference between going on for one of the orphans and going on for Annie," said Taylor, who has played Annie about 80 times so far. "There's more songs, more dancing, more time being onstage that you have to be prepared for. So I guess you have to work extra-hard when you go on as Annie."

Based on the beloved comic strip that debuted in 1924, the musical is the heartwarming tale of the Depression-era orphan girl who finds happiness with a grouchy millionaire and a lovable dog.

Producers have decided that each girl will play Annie for four of the eight-shows each week. The girl not playing the title role will go on as Duffy, the biggest of the orphans who memorably stomps on Miss Hannigan's foot in Act 2.

Sadie has previously been in productions of "The Miracle Worker" and "The Secret Garden." Taylor was in a regional production of "Honk!" Both played Susan Waverly in "Irving Berlin's White Christmas" when they were 8.

Both adore musical theater and harbor dreams of one day playing either Elphaba in "Wicked" or Christine in "The Phantom of the Opera." They eat dinner together and go out for fun. When they were offered the part, they had to keep it a secret, but each would knowingly smile to each other.

Sadie has a particular tie to the part of Annie: Her grandfather was adopted by parents looking for a child with red hair. "I thought that was really cool that I had that connection once I found out," she said.

The mothers of both girls ? neither who have red hair ? are bursting with pride but shy away from taking credit for producing singing, dancing and acting prodigies.

"There are definitely some people in both sides of our family that are musically gifted and talented. I am not," said Tiffany Richardson, Taylor's mom, with a laugh. "It skipped me and went to her. I'm OK with that."

Though clearly talented, Sadie is not the first in her family to be on Broadway. One of her three older brothers, Mitchell, played a part in "Elf" this winter ? the reason Sadie came to New York. Sadie also has a younger sister with curly red hair who likes to sing.

"The red hair and the talent? I don't know," said Lori Sink, Sadie's mother.

Tiffany Richardson has already seen her daughter take center stage on Broadway as Annie, and said she and Sadie's mother will soon have a special bond. "I can't wait to share that feeling with Lori because it really is a special feeling," she said.

"Annie" first opened on Broadway in 1977 and ran for almost six years, fueled by songs including "It's the Hard-Knock Life" and "Tomorrow." A film version was released in 1982 with Aileen Quinn playing the star and a TV version came out in 1999 starring Alicia Morton.

The musical, which features music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin and book by Thomas Meehan, is directed by three-time Tony winner James Lapine and choreographed by Tony winner Andy Blankenbuehler.

Crawford, who has been in the show since its first preview in October, will have played the role close to 300 times. Other actresses who have had their start in "Annie" include Sarah Jessica Parker, Molly Ringwald and Sutton Foster.

In other "Annie" news, Anthony Warlow, who has been playing Oliver Warbucks since the show began, has extended his contract with the production through Dec. 8. Faith Prince begins playing Miss Hannigan on July 19.

California tops auto theft list ? Bankrate, Inc.

California's car culture, long celebrated in such Beach Boys classics as "Little Deuce Coupe," "409" and "I Get Around," has also spawned an equally robust car theft industry, judging by the latest "Hot Spots" vehicle theft report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

California once again dominates the list of metropolitan statistical areas, or MSAs, where car owners and auto insurance companies were most vulnerable to theft in 2012. Communities in the Golden State claim eight of the top 10 slots:

1. Modesto, Calif.
2. Fresno, Calif.
3. Bakersfield-Delano, Calif.
4. Stockton, Calif.
5. Yakima, Wash.
6. San Francisco/Oakland/Hayward, Calif.
7. San Jose/Sunnyvale/Santa Clara, Calif.
8. Vallejo/Fairfield, Calif.
9. Spokane/Spokane Valley, Wash.
10. Redding, Calif.

Six of the California hot spots also placed in last year's top 10. Expand the list, and the state claims 14 of the top 20 best places not to park your car.

Theft goes west

In fact, the western states -- Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming -- saw a 10.6 percent increase in vehicle theft last year. By contrast, the South was down 2.9 percent, the Midwest saw a 3.1 percent decline, and thefts in the Northeast were down 7.9 percent from the previous year.

The NICB ratings are consistent with preliminary FBI statistics for 2012 that point to a 1.3 percent national increase in vehicle thefts, following eight years of declines. The final numbers are due this fall.

So how many car thefts are we talking here? In Modesto, there were 4,260 reported thefts. But drive west to the more densely populated San Francisco Bay area, and you're looking at 28,220 thefts last year. Because the Hot Spots report is based on population, areas like Modesto with fewer total thefts but smaller populations often rank higher than areas with more stolen cars overall but a smaller incidence per capita.

Safety in Hawaii -- or at home

Where's Waldo to park without risking his ride? He'll find an absolutely safe space on the lovely isle of Maui, Hawaii, where nary a single vehicle was reported missing last year in the Kahului/Wailuku/Lahaina MSA.

The NICB recommends this "four layers of protection" approach to avoid vehicle theft and its potentially negative impact on your auto insurance rates:

? Common sense: Remember to take your keys with you, close your windows, lock your doors and park in a safe, well-lit area.
? Anti-theft devices: Invest in visible and audible alarms, brake and wheel locks and other theft-deterrent devices.
? Ride immobilizers: Prevent "hot-wiring" with smart keys, fuse cut-offs and other onboard technology that prevents thieves from starting your vehicle's engine.
? Tracking devices: Install a GPS or other tracking device that alerts you if your vehicle has been moved, and helps police locate it if it's stolen.

Facebook to pull ads from pages with sex, violence

Facebook says it will no longer allow ads to appear on pages with sexual or violent content, as the online social network moves to appease marketers being associated with objectionable material.

The announcement on Friday came a month after several businesses pulled their ads from Facebook amid reports of pages on the site that promoted violence against women.

Facebook said at the time that it needed to improve its system for flagging and removing content that violated its community standards, which forbid users from posting content about hate-speech, threats and pornography, among other things.

Ads account for roughly 85 percent of revenue at Facebook, the world's largest social network with 1.1 billion users. Facebook said the changes would not have a meaningful impact on its business.

On Friday, Facebook said it also needed to do more to prevent situations in which ads are displayed alongside material that may not run afoul of its community standards but are deemed controversial nonetheless.

A Facebook page for a business that sells adult products, for example, will no longer feature ads. Previously such a page could feature ads along the right-hand side of the page so long as the page did not violate Facebook's prohibition on depicting nudity.

The move underscores the delicate balance for social media companies, which features a variety of unpredictable and sometimes unsavory content shared by users, but which rely on advertising to underpin their business.

"Our goal is to both preserve the freedoms of sharing on Facebook but also protect people and brands from certain types of content," Facebook said in a post on its website on Friday.

Facebook said that it would expand the scope of pages and groups on its website that should be ad-restricted and promised to remove ads from the flagged areas of the website by the end of the coming week.

Pages and groups that reference violence will also be off limits to ads, the company said. A Facebook spokeswoman noted that the policy would not apply to the pages of news organizations on Facebook.

Facebook said the process of flagging objectionable pages and removing ads would initially be done manually, but that the company will build an automated system to do the job in the coming weeks.

A stepping-stone for oxygen on Earth

June 26, 2013 ? For most terrestrial life on Earth, oxygen is necessary for survival. But the planet's atmosphere did not always contain this life-sustaining substance, and one of science's greatest mysteries is how and when oxygenic photosynthesis -- the process responsible for producing oxygen on Earth through the splitting of water molecules -- first began. Now, a team led by geobiologists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has found evidence of a precursor photosystem involving manganese that predates cyanobacteria, the first group of organisms to release oxygen into the environment via photosynthesis.

The findings, outlined in the June 24 early edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), strongly support the idea that manganese oxidation -- which, despite the name, is a chemical reaction that does not have to involve oxygen -- provided an evolutionary stepping-stone for the development of water-oxidizing photosynthesis in cyanobacteria.

"Water-oxidizing or water-splitting photosynthesis was invented by cyanobacteria approximately 2.4 billion years ago and then borrowed by other groups of organisms thereafter," explains Woodward Fischer, assistant professor of geobiology at Caltech and a coauthor of the study. "Algae borrowed this photosynthetic system from cyanobacteria, and plants are just a group of algae that took photosynthesis on land, so we think with this finding we're looking at the inception of the molecular machinery that would give rise to oxygen."

Photosynthesis is the process by which energy from the sun is used by plants and other organisms to split water and carbon dioxide molecules to make carbohydrates and oxygen. Manganese is required for water splitting to work, so when scientists began to wonder what evolutionary steps may have led up to an oxygenated atmosphere on Earth, they started to look for evidence of manganese-oxidizing photosynthesis prior to cyanobacteria. Since oxidation simply involves the transfer of electrons to increase the charge on an atom -- and this can be accomplished using light or O2 -- it could have occurred before the rise of oxygen on this planet.

"Manganese plays an essential role in modern biological water splitting as a necessary catalyst in the process, so manganese-oxidizing photosynthesis makes sense as a potential transitional photosystem," says Jena Johnson, a graduate student in Fischer's laboratory at Caltech and lead author of the study.

To test the hypothesis that manganese-based photosynthesis occurred prior to the evolution of oxygenic cyanobacteria, the researchers examined drill cores (newly obtained by the Agouron Institute) from 2.415 billion-year-old South African marine sedimentary rocks with large deposits of manganese.

Manganese is soluble in seawater. Indeed, if there are no strong oxidants around to accept electrons from the manganese, it will remain aqueous, Fischer explains, but the second it is oxidized, or loses electrons, manganese precipitates, forming a solid that can become concentrated within seafloor sediments.

"Just the observation of these large enrichments -- 16 percent manganese in some samples -- provided a strong implication that the manganese had been oxidized, but this required confirmation," he says.

To prove that the manganese was originally part of the South African rock and not deposited there later by hydrothermal fluids or some other phenomena, Johnson and colleagues developed and employed techniques that allowed the team to assess the abundance and oxidation state of manganese-bearing minerals at a very tiny scale of 2 microns.

"And it's warranted -- these rocks are complicated at a micron scale!" Fischer says. "And yet, the rocks occupy hundreds of meters of stratigraphy across hundreds of square kilometers of ocean basin, so you need to be able to work between many scales -- very detailed ones, but also across the whole deposit to understand the ancient environmental processes at work."

Using these multiscale approaches, Johnson and colleagues demonstrated that the manganese was original to the rocks and first deposited in sediments as manganese oxides, and that manganese oxidation occurred over a broad swath of the ancient marine basin during the entire timescale captured by the drill cores.

"It's really amazing to be able to use X-ray techniques to look back into the rock record and use the chemical observations on the microscale to shed light on some of the fundamental processes and mechanisms that occurred billions of years ago," says Samuel Webb, coauthor on the paper and beam line scientist at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory at Stanford University, where many of the study's experiments took place. "Questions regarding the evolution of the photosynthetic pathway and the subsequent rise of oxygen in the atmosphere are critical for understanding not only the history of our own planet, but also the basics of how biology has perfected the process of photosynthesis."

Once the team confirmed that the manganese had been deposited as an oxide phase when the rock was first forming, they checked to see if these manganese oxides were actually formed before water-splitting photosynthesis or if they formed after as a result of reactions with oxygen. They used two different techniques to check whether oxygen was present. It was not -- proving that water-splitting photosynthesis had not yet evolved at that point in time. The manganese in the deposits had indeed been oxidized and deposited before the appearance of water-splitting cyanobacteria. This implies, the researchers say, that manganese-oxidizing photosynthesis was a stepping-stone for oxygen-producing, water-splitting photosynthesis.

"I think that there will be a number of additional experiments that people will now attempt to try and reverse engineer a manganese photosynthetic photosystem or cell," Fischer says. "Once you know that this happened, it all of a sudden gives you reason to take more seriously an experimental program aimed at asking, 'Can we make a photosystem that's able to oxidize manganese but doesn't then go on to split water? How does it behave, and what is its chemistry?' Even though we know what modern water splitting is and what it looks like, we still don't know exactly how it works. There is a still a major discovery to be made to find out exactly how the catalysis works, and now knowing where this machinery comes from may open new perspectives into its function -- an understanding that could help target technologies for energy production from artificial photosynthesis. "

Next up in Fischer's lab, Johnson plans to work with others to try and mutate a cyanobacteria to "go backwards" and perform manganese-oxidizing photosynthesis. The team also plans to investigate a set of rocks from western Australia that are similar in age to the samples used in the current study and may also contain beds of manganese. If their current study results are truly an indication of manganese-oxidizing photosynthesis, they say, there should be evidence of the same processes in other parts of the world.

"Oxygen is the backdrop on which this story is playing out on, but really, this is a tale of the evolution of this very intense metabolism that happened once -- an evolutionary singularity that transformed the planet," Fischer says. "We've provided insight into how the evolution of one of these remarkable molecular machines led up to the oxidation of our planet's atmosphere, and now we're going to follow up on all angles of our findings."

Funding for the research outlined in the PNAS paper, titled "Manganese-oxidizing photosynthesis before the rise of cyanobacteria," was provided by the Agouron Institute, NASA's Exobiology Branch, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, and the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship program. Joseph Kirschvink, Nico and Marilyn Van Wingen Professor of Geobiology at Caltech, also contributed to the study along with Katherine Thomas and Shuhei Ono from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Okla. executes man in death of girlfriend's mother

TULSA, Okla. (AP) ? A man convicted of raping and murdering his girlfriend's mother in 2001 was put to death in Oklahoma Tuesday, despite a recommendation by Oklahoma's pardon and parole board to commute his death sentence after he apologized.

Brian Darrell Davis, 39, received a lethal injection Tuesday at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester. Davis was the third inmate to be executed by Oklahoma this year and the second in as many weeks.

The state's parole board had suggested to Gov. Mary Fallin that she cut Davis' sentence to life without parole. Fallin rejected the board recommendation, with spokesman Aaron Cooper saying the governor reviewed Davis' file and was "satisfied that justice is being served in this case."

A Kay County jury convicted Davis in 2003 of first-degree murder and first-degree rape in the death of his girlfriend's mother, Josephine Sanford, 52. Davis was sentenced to death on the murder conviction and 100 years in prison for rape.

The victim's daughter, Stacey Sanford, discovered her mother dead in November 2001 in the Ponca City apartment she shared with Davis. Prosecutors said Josephine Sanford had six stab wounds, a broken jaw and marks around her neck. DNA evidence showed Davis had sex with the victim.

Davis went to the parole board this month, took responsibility for the victim's death and apologized. He said the sexual contact was consensual and that a fight broke out after he remarked about its quality.

"I was rude at the end," Davis said, appearing before the panel by video. "We were mad at each other after my comment. And one thing led to another. It just happened so quick."

The board voted 4-1 in favor of clemency, prompting Attorney General Scott Pruitt to say the board was usurping the jury that convicted Davis and that the inmate deserved to die for a brutal crime.

Davis' defense attorney, Jack Fisher, said as the execution date approached that justice was not being served.

"By the end of the clemency hearing, four of the five board members were convinced that justice could only be served by a sentence of life without parole," Fisher said. "Why Governor Fallin would substitute her judgment for four members of the board is a mystery to me."

Death penalty opponents, who rallied Monday at the state Capitol to urge Fallin to show mercy, argued that Davis deserved life in prison, not death, after he showed remorse.

They also suggested that since Davis, who is black, was convicted by an all-white jury in Kay County that it wasn't truly a jury of his peers and there could have been bias.

"Our governor is in a position to make a wrong right," said Garland Pruitt, president of the Oklahoma City chapter of the NAACP. "Wrongs can be righted, hearts can be changed, but it takes those in office to help make those changes take place."

Last week, the state executed James Lewis DeRosa, 36, for his part in the brutal killings of a LeFlore County ranch couple in 2000.

Super-Earths: Three Exoplanets Discovered Orbiting Star Gliese 667C, May Support Alien Life

The habitable zone of a nearby star is filled to the brim with planets that could support alien life, scientists announced today (June 25).

An international team of scientists found a record-breaking three potentially habitable planets around the star Gliese 667C, a star 22 light-years from Earth that is orbited by at least six planets, and possibly as many as seven, researchers said. The three planet contenders for alien life are in the star's "habitable zone" ? the temperature region around the star where liquid water could exist. Gliese 667C is part of a three-star system, so the planets could see three suns in their daytime skies.

The three potentially rocky planets in Gliese 667C's habitable zone are known as super-Earths ? exoplanets that are less massive than Neptune but more massive than Earth. Their orbits make them possible candidates for hosting life, officials from the European Southern Observatory said in a statement. [See images of the alien planets of star Gliese 667C]

"We knew that the star had three planets from previous studies, so we wanted to see whether there were any more," co-leader of the study Mikko Tuomi of the University of Hertfordshire, U.K. said in a statement. "By adding some new observations and revisiting existing data we were able to confirm these three and confidently reveal several more. Finding three low-mass planets in the star's habitable zone is very exciting!"

three super earths
This picture shows the sky around multiple star Gliese 667. The bright star at the center is Gliese 667 A and B, the two main components of the system, which cannot be separated in this image. Photo credit: ESO

This is the first time three low-mass planets have been spotted in the habitable zone of the same star system, and it's unlikely that astronomers will find any more around Gliese 667C. The star's habitable zone is packed full, making it impossible for another planet to orbit stably within the zone, the researchers said.

"The number of potentially habitable planets in our galaxy is much greater if we can expect to find several of them around each low-mass star ? instead of looking at 10 stars to look for a single potentially habitable planet, we now know we can look at just one star and find several of them," team member Rory Barnes of the University of Washington said in a statement.

Gliese 667C is the faintest star in the three-star system. From the surface of the planets in orbit around Gliese 667C, the two brighter stars would be as bright as the full moon by night and shine visibly during the day, ESO scientists said.

Gliese 667C is cooler and dimmer than the sun, making it possible for planets that have very close-in orbits to remain habitable. This star's habitable zone lies within an orbit the size of Mercury's around the sun, ESO officials said.

  • Melbourne Zoo?s newest primate baby, a three week-old Colobus monkey, is held in the arms of her mother Clover, in Melbourne on June 29, 2011. Keepers have not been able to determine the sex of the newborn monkey which is pure white and won?t display any black markings until it?s several months old. Black and White Colobus Monkeys, native to Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania and Kenya, have seen their populations suffer from the fur trade during colonial times, but now the greatest threats to their survival are the loss of their habitat and the bushmeat trade, the large-scale hunting to supply meat to towns and cities. Nelson Mandela in 'critical' condition

    By Ed Cropley

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Former South African president Nelson Mandela's condition deteriorated to "critical" on Sunday, the government said, two weeks after the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader was admitted to hospital with a lung infection.

The worsening of his condition is bound to concern South Africa's 53 million people, for whom Mandela remains the architect of a peaceful transition to democracy in 1994 after three centuries of white domination.

A government statement said President Jacob Zuma and the deputy leader of the ruling African National Congress (ANC), Cyril Ramaphosa, visited Mandela in his Pretoria hospital, where doctors said his condition had gone downhill in the last 24 hours.

"The doctors are doing everything possible to get his condition to improve and are ensuring that Madiba is well looked after and is comfortable," it said, referring to him by his clan name.

Mandela, who became South Africa's first black president after historic all-race elections nearly two decades ago, was rushed to a Pretoria hospital on June 8 with a recurrence of a lung infection, his fourth hospitalisation in six months.

Until Sunday, official communiques had described his condition as "serious but stable" although comments last week from Mandela family members and his presidential successor, Thabo Mbeki, suggested he was on the mend.

Since stepping down after one term as president, Mandela has played little role in the public or political life of the continent's biggest and most important economy.

His last public appearance was waving to fans from the back of a golf cart before the final of the soccer World Cup in Johannesburg's Soccer City stadium in July 2010.

During his retirement, he has divided his time between his home in the wealthy Johannesburg suburb of Houghton, and Qunu, the village in the impoverished Eastern Cape province where he was born.

The public's last glimpse of him was a brief clip aired by state television in April during a visit to his home by Zuma and other senior ANC officials.

At the time, the 101-year-old liberation movement, which led the fight against white-minority rule, assured the public Mandela was "in good shape" although the footage showed a thin and frail old man sitting expressionless in an armchair.

"Obviously we are very worried," ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu told Johannesburg station Talk Radio 702. "We are praying for him, his family and the doctors."

    "ABSOLUTELY AN ICON"

Since his latest admission to hospital, well-wishers have been arriving at his Johannesburg home, with scores of school-children leaving painted stones outside the gates bearing prayers for his recovery.

However, for the first time, South African media have broken a taboo against contemplating the inevitable passing of the father of the post-apartheid "Rainbow Nation" and one of the 20th century's most influential figures.

The day after he went into hospital, South Africa's Sunday Times newspaper carried a front-page headline saying it was "time to let him go".

"He's absolutely an icon and if he's gone we just have to accept that. He will be gone but his teachings, what he stood for, I'm sure we've all learnt and we should be able to live with it and reproduce it wherever we go," said Tshepho Langa, a customer at a Johannesburg hotel.

"He's done his best," he added. "We are grateful for it and we are willing to do the good that he has done."

Despite the widespread adulation, Mandela is not without detractors at home and in the rest of Africa who feel that in the dying days of apartheid he made too many concessions to whites, who make up just 10 percent of the population.

After more than 10 years of affirmative action policies aimed at redressing the balance, South Africa remains one of the world's most unequal societies, with whites still controlling much of the economy and the average white household earning six times more than a black one.

"Mandela has gone a bit too far in doing good to the non-black communities, really in some cases at the expense of (blacks)," Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, 89, said in a documentary aired on South African television this month.

"That's being too saintly, too good, too much of a saint."

China slump, higher bond yields weigh on markets

(AP Photo/Richard Drew)

Wall Street started Monday where it left off last week: worried about the Fed and China.

Traders in the U.S. dumped stocks, bonds and commodities, prompted by signs of distress in China's economy and worries about the end of the Federal Reserve bank's easy money policies. The selling pushed down the Dow Jones industrial average as much as 248 points in the first hour of trading, and lifted the yield on the 10-year note to its highest level in almost two years.

The sell-off is another a sign of how vulnerable financial markets remain to any comments from the Fed about its $85 billion in monthly bond purchases, which have kept interest rates at historic lows and helped drive the stock market's rally the last four years. On Wednesday and Thursday, the S&P plunged 3.9 percent after the central bank said its bond-buying program could wrap up by the middle of next year as long as economic conditions continue to improve. Stocks edged up Friday, but still had their worst week in two months. Worries about China's growth and tighter lending conditions have also contributed to the market's fall since last Thursday.

"Investors are jittery" about what exactly the Fed is trying to say, said Janet Engels, senior vice president and director of the private client research group at RBC Wealth Management. And then with China, "now we question whether the second-largest economy in the world is going to grow at the rate that everyone had expected. The view is that everything that we thought to be true, now we need to question."

She said the U.S. stock decline "probably has further to go."

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 195 points, or 1.3 percent, to 14,605 as of 12:40 p.m.

The Standard & Poor's index fell 30 points, or 1.9 percent, to 1,562. It is now 6.7 percent below its all-time high reached May 21. The Nasdaq composite fell 59 points, or 1.7 percent, to 3,299.

Banks, which are sensitive to the outlook for economic growth, had some of the biggest losses. All 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 index were lower, led by a 2.8 percent decline in financial stocks. Among individual bank stocks, Bank of America lost 42 cents, or 3.3 percent, to $12.26.

Pullbacks that occur during bull markets tend to be "nasty and brutish," but also "short," said John Manley, chief equity strategist at Wells Fargo Funds Management. He said it's common to get declines of 3 percent to 7 percent "as the market restores a reverence to risk to the investing public."

The last time the U.S. stock market had a full-blown correction ? defined as a drop of at least 10 percent from a peak ? was July 22-Oct. 3, 2011, when the S&P 500 fell 18.3 percent. That fall was caused by concern that a fight between U.S. lawmakers over extending the debt ceiling would push the U.S. into default.

Since starting its bull run in March 2009, the S&P 500 has had six pullbacks of between 5 and 9 percent and two corrections. So far, the market has come back stronger from each setback. The S&P is still up 131 percent during this four-year bull market.

Monday's selling also showed up in the U.S. government bond market, where the yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose from 2.54 percent Friday to 2.59 percent, the highest level in almost two years.

The yield has surged from its 2013 low of 1.63 percent on May 3. The increase accelerated last week after the Federal Reserve laid out its possible timetable for curtailing its bond-buying program. Yields rise when demand for bonds weakens.

The Fed's easy-money policies have kept bond yields and other interest rates artificially low since the financial crisis of 2008, making borrowing cheaper. The 10-year yield is used as a benchmark for many kinds of loans to individuals and businesses, including home mortgages.

The last time the yield was above 3 percent was late July, 2011. The last time it was consistently above 4 percent was July 2008, two months before the peak of the financial crisis.

Before trading began Monday on Wall Street, China's main stock exchange had its biggest loss in four years, and the selling spread to Europe. China's Shanghai Composite Index fell 5 percent, prompted by a government crackdown on off-balance sheet lending, which made investors worry about China's economic growth. France's benchmark stock index fell 1.7 percent, Germany's 1.2 percent.

Metals prices also fell. Gold fell $16 to $1,275 an ounce and silver fell 51 cents to $19.45 an ounce.

Other stocks with big moves included:

? PulteGroup slumped 96 cents, or 5.1 percent, to $17.85. Investors have worried that higher U.S. interest rates will hurt homebuilding companies by making mortgages more expensive.

? Tenet Healthcare rose 95 cents, or 2.3 percent, to $42.81 after offering to buy Vanguard Health Systems Inc. for $1.8 billion. The offer of $21 per share pushed Vanguard stock up $8.58, or 69 percent, to $20.95.

? Facebook fell 94 cents, or 3.9 percent, to $23.59. Monday was the first full trading day after Facebook acknowledged it had accidentally exposed contact information for 6 million users to some other users.

? Apple fell $13.50, or 3.3 percent, to $400 after an analyst said the company appears to have cut back iPhone production. The company didn't have any immediate comment.

Edward Snowden In A 'Safe Place' As U.S. Prepares To Seek Extradition

    By Phil Stewart
WASHINGTON, June 22 (Reuters) - Edward Snowden was in a "safe place" in Hong Kong, a newspaper reported on Saturday, as the United States prepared to seek the extradition of the former U.S. National Security Agency contractor after filing espionage charges against him.
The South China Morning Post said Snowden, who has exposed secret U.S. surveillance programs including new details published on Saturday about alleged hacking of Chinese phone companies, was not in police protection in Hong Kong, as had been reported elsewhere.
"Contrary to some reports, the former CIA analyst has not been detained, is not under police protection but is in a 'safe place' in Hong Kong," the newspaper said.
Hong Kong Police Commissioner Andy Tsang declined to comment other than to say Hong Kong would deal with the case in accordance with the law.
Two U.S. sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the United States was preparing to seek Snowden's extradition from Hong Kong, which is part of China but has wide-ranging autonomy, including an independent judiciary.
The United States charged Snowden with theft of government property, unauthorized communication of national defense information and willful communication of classified communications intelligence to an unauthorized person, according to the criminal complaint made public on Friday.
The latter two offenses fall under the U.S. Espionage Act and carry penalties of up to 10 years in prison.
America's use of the Espionage Act against Snowden has fueled debate among legal experts about whether that could complicate his extradition, since Hong Kong courts may choose to shield him.
Snowden says he leaked the details of the classified U.S. surveillance to expose abusive programs that trampled on citizens' rights.
Documents leaked by Snowden revealed that the NSA has access to vast amounts of internet data such as emails, chat rooms and video from large companies such as Facebook and Google, under a government program known as Prism.
They also showed that the government had worked through the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to gather so-called metadata - such as the time, duration and telephone numbers called - on all calls carried by service providers such as Verizon.
On Friday, the Guardian newspaper, citing documents shared by Snowden, said Britain's spy agency GCHQ had tapped fiber-optic cables that carry international phone and internet traffic and is sharing vast quantities of personal information with the NSA.

    STEALING DATA
The South China Morning Post said on Saturday that Snowden offered new details on U.S. surveillance activities in China.
The paper said documents and statements by Snowden show the NSA program had hacked major Chinese telecoms companies to access text messages and targeted China's top Tsinghua University.
The NSA program also hacked the Hong Kong headquarters of Pacnet, which has an extensive fiber-optic network, it said.
"The NSA does all kinds of things like hack Chinese cellphone companies to steal all of your SMS data," Snowden was quoted by the Post as saying during a June 12 interview.
President Barack Obama and his intelligence chiefs have vigorously defended the programs, saying they are regulated by law and that Congress was notified. They say the programs have been used to thwart militant plots and do not target Americans' personal lives.
Since making his revelations about massive U.S. surveillance programs, Edward Snowden, 30, has sought legal representation from human rights lawyers as he prepares to fight U.S. attempts to force him home for trial, sources in Hong Kong say.
The United States and Hong Kong signed an extradition treaty in 1998, under which scores of Americans have been sent back home to face trial.
The United States and Hong Kong have "excellent cooperation" and as a result of agreements, "there is an active extradition relationship between Hong Kong and the United States," a U.S. law enforcement official told Reuters.
However, the process can take years, lawyers say, and Snowden's case could be particularly complex.
An Icelandic businessman linked to the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks said on Thursday he had readied a private plane in China to fly Snowden to Iceland if Iceland's government would grant asylum.
Iceland refused on Friday to say whether it would grant asylum to Snowden. (Reporting by Phil Stewart; Additional reporting by James Pomfret, Venus Wu and Grace Li in HONG KONG, Tabassum Zakaria and Mark Hosenball in WASHINGTON; Editing by Eric Beech)

    Nuzlocke Important Information (MUST READ)

    General Nuzlocke Deatails...

    Nuzlocke:
If you are unaware of what exactly a "Nuzlocke Run" is I will be glad to tell you
    1. You may only catch one Pokemon per area of the game.
    2. If a pokemon faints, It is dead and may never be used again.
    3. You may not catch more than one of the same species of pokemon.
    4. All pokemon must be nicknamed.

I urge you to look up nuzloke comics. They are very enjoyable. I recomend Petty's nuzlocke as well as the original "Pokemon Hard-Mode"

    General Storyline:
Red has retired to Evergrande City. His Pokemon have all been killed except for Pikachu. He teaches in a University there, teaching history. One day a number of his best students get together and decide that his lessons are too important to ignore, and choose to help fix the problem plaguing the Kanto Region. The students come from all over the world. Most from Hoenn, but many travelled from Johto, Sinnoh, and Unova. None are from Kanto.

They ask Red to help them get to Kanto to investigate the mystery, as well as a powerful pseudo monarch named Daimon. I will not divulgeany more aspects of the story just yet.

See me as the announcer from any Pokemon game. The text that reads "Congratulations.... or Youve recieved the ... badge" I wll be filling that role.

    Starting Pokemon:
Every character will start with at least three pokemon including your starter. You may have any Pokemon from the region your OC was born in. This obviously excludes Leendaries. The maximum starting level of any pokemon is 30. You will level up during the roleplay. Starters include any starter you could get from that particular region. Ralts, Pikachu, and Eevee may not be starters. Starters will be first come first served, if you miss your favorite starter, bad luck, pick another. No shinies at the start. I will give a list of Off Limits pokemon until later on in the Roleplay, to keep everthing paced I dont want you to have too many powerful pokemon yet. You will be able to get these pokemon later.

    Off Limits For EVER:
    Mew, Mewtwo, Moltres, Zapdos, Articuno
Lugia, Ho-Oh, Entei, Suicune, Raiku, Celebi

Victini, Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion, Tornadus, Thunderus, Landorus, Keldeo, Reshiram, Zekrom, Kyurem, Meloetta, Genesect, Zorua, Zoroark

    Dratini, Dragonair, Dragonite, Lapras
    Larvitar, Pupitar, Tyranitar,

Spiritomb, Gible, Gabite, Garchomp, Deino, Zweilous, Hydregion

    Deaths:
You will all lose pokemon. Dont be upset with me or anyone else, Its a nuzlocke, Itll happen. Heres how its going to happen.
    1. You get to a part in the story where I think its time for someone to die.
    2. I'll post a narration, stalling posts concerning this character until the Roleplayer and discuss things.
    3. I'll Pm you asking "Pick one or Pick half" This means you pick one Pokemon for me to kill, or you pick half of your team to be granted immunity and I choose who dies from the rest of your team. If you have an odd number of pokemon you get to pick the majority.
Ex. You have five, I Pm you. You get to pick three to save or one to die.
    4. I post, killing your pokemon.
    5. you post. We all go on our merry way, and your chacter gets to mourn.

At certain points I will kill more than one of your pokemon. Not often. Only in very imporant battles. Everything will go the same, except you will post in between the death posts switching out your pokemon so the next one to die is out in the battle.

Dont worry, I wont go power hungry and kill a pokemon every twenty minutes. I will base deaths on the trainers age, skill, personality, and strategy.

    Battles:
When battles occur that will directly affect the story I will post a stalling post, and in the OOC im going to tell you who is going to win the battle. This is to avoid the potential godmodding pokemon battles sometimes offer. Remember, this is only going to happen in important battles. Again, Im not power hungry, just trying to maintain my story and keep everything fair. Again, these wins will depend on my judgement of the players strategy, personality, and skill with their pokemon. Remember, you can lose a battle without losing pokemon. Running away is a very viable option.

    H.Ms:
Hms do not take up a move spot if your pokemon could physically do the action without the move. Ex. Scyther may use cut, Lapras may use surf, and Fearow may use fly without the Hm, but cant attack with it.

    Items:
All Items are fair game. You may use any item the games offer. Hold Items, potions, status healers, berries... anything you can potentially find in game can be used.

    T.Ms:
T.Ms are fair as well, just Pm me and ask me for a Tm. Ill pick one that could benifit your team and place it in the general location of your character. Dont ask me for a specific Tm. I will give you one of my choosing. Dont worry, I wont screw you.

    Shops:
Kanto is in shambles, so the PokeMarts dont exist anymore.

    Random Pokemon Encounters:
Every so often I will decide to drop a special pokemon into the game. think of it as an "Event Pokemon."
When I do this I will post a Narration. "A "Blank" has Appeared on cycling road." Once i do, everyone should post a number from 1-15 in the OOC. Whoever is the closest to a number I pick without going over will have th chance to catch it.
These pokemon will be specia in many ways. Many will be shiny. Many will have very powerful moves that the pokemon may not usually be able to get. Some will be very rare, maybe another starter for example? An Example- "A shiny Lapras has appeared. There have been reports of it using the move Hydro Cannon."

    Capturing:
Because this is a Nuzlocke each Character may only catch one Pokemon per area, and will not be allowed to catch the same one again. I wont deny you a pokemon you want as long as you post that you threw a ball at it. I will post a Narration. "Congratulations So and so has caught a Rattata" Ask me if you arent sure what pokemon are in your area.

    Leveling:
I'll read your posts and tell you when I think your Pokemon has leveled up. I will post a narration. "Congratulations so and so has grown to level 16"
Feel free to post that you had a grinding session in some area, but if you do you cant post for a few hours, and wont be able to have another grinding session for a few days. I will gauge how many levels your team grew based on your location, your pokemon levels, your pokemon type, and the amount of time you spent there. So if you spend 3 hours in Viridian Forest ill post. "Congratulations So and so's team has grown two levels." 3 hours minus one because Viridian forest is weak. If your pokemon are more than twenty levels above the pokemon on a route you may not grind there.

    Evolving:
When you reach the evolution level of a pokemon feel free to evolve it. If you find a stone, feel free to evolve. I will tell you when I think youve spent enough time with your pokemon for it to evolve from happiness, as well as when to hatch an egg.

    Travel:
If you have a bird pokemon you may use Fly, but as in the games, you may only fly to somewhere youve been before. If you have a Water pokemon, you may surf, or if youve taught Surf to a pokemon you may surf.

    Moves:
Pokemon can only have up to four moves. Simple

    Character Profiles:
Fill them out as youd like. I just require a picture, age, name, history, and personality.
When writing in your pokemon I want it like so.

    Picture of pokemon.
    Name- "Nickname"
    Level
    Moves.
    Moves.
    Moves.
    Moves.
    hold item
