Jessica Capshaw Welcomes Third Child

Jessica Capshaw and Christopher Gavigan welcomed their third child this week.

The Grey’s Anatomy star, 35, gave birth to daughter Poppy James Gavigan, on Wednesday, June 20, her rep confirms. “Our hearts are just bursting with love and gratitude upon the arrival of our baby girl,” the couple said.

Poppy joins elder siblings Eve Augusta, 20 months, and Luke Hudson, 4½.

“I don’t really think about what the challenges are going to be,” the stepdaughter of Steven Spielberg said of raising three. “For me, it’s not about the challenges."

"I keep thinking about how lucky we are. For some reason, even with the third one, it really never, ever is lost on me that every single baby is a miracle.”

Pretty special thing to say. Congratulations to the family!

Bargain finds at your local post office

Next time you mail a package or stop in to buy stamps, take a look at your post office's bulletin board. No telling what you'll find.

About once a month or so, I find myself over at the local post office mailing packages. I?m selling something on eBay or shipping a gift to a relative or trading something by mail.

Whatever it is, I usually finish my visit to the post office by taking a long look at the bulletin board.

At my local post office (and at pretty much every smaller post office I?ve ever visited), the bulletin board is a crazy medley of local event announcements, items for sale, people looking for a group, and countless other things. It?s like a small town version of Craigslist, except with more variety and chaos.

To give you an idea of the value of doing this, here are some of the things I?ve found on that bulletin board over the last several months.

I found a ?moving to another country? sale, where the people were trying to sell the vast majority of their belongings. I wound up buying three or four items from them at a pittance.

I found an announcement about a free concert that was quite enjoyable. The event included a silent auction and several raffles for charity, where my wife ended up bidding on (and winning) some very discounted tickets for our family at the local zoo.

I found an announcement of a local book club that was starting up. I actually tried to join this, but the schedule of the club wound up conflicting with my own schedule too much.

In addition, I found about a dozen yard and garage sale announcements, a notice about an upcoming community festival, and a youth club in the area that?s looking for new members.

These were just the things I was interested in. There were vehicles and other items for sale, an announcement of a big party for someone I didn?t know, and tons of announcements of carnivals and other such community events.

Not only is this a useful resource for finding things, it can also be useful to post things as well. Want to privately sell a vehicle? Wanting to form a book club or host some other local event? Wanting to start a community group? Your post office bulletin board is probably a good place to start.

The next time you?re in your local post office mailing a package or picking up some stamps, spend a moment to look at the bulletin board that might be posted in there. You might just find a thing or two of real value to you.

Wikipedia is editorial warzone, says study

The Internet is a wonderland for sociologists, and one of the richest areas of study is Wikipedia, with its years of open?collaboration and communication?archived for posterity. But with collaboration comes conflict, and the "edit wars" that embroil hot Wikipedia?topics are dissected in detail in a new paper by researchers in Budapest.

Though the study does not make for exciting reading, there are some interesting revelations about the way such conflicts run their course, and the people who make it all happen.

After they establish criteria for a "controversial" article?(rather than articles that?are edited frequently merely because the topic requires it), the researchers unearth a few commonalities?right away:

• Whether an article gets a dozen or a thousand edits in a month, they tend to be "bursty" ? that is, many edits tend to cluster together as editors add, revise, correct and, if necessary, remove new information. Both "homosexuality" and "Lady Gaga" follow this trend (below), though due to the huge amounts of updates the performer has every month, it's a bit harder to tell. Edits don't happen like drips of water from a cave ceiling, gradually forming a stalagmite. Rather, they come on?like flash floods and leave new landscapes in their wake.

• Edit wars are frequently conducted between a few extremely vociferous individuals. While dozens of editors may contribute to an article over any given period of time, it is often a much?smaller number of highly opinionated editors who contribute the bulk of the edits, often redoing or removing each other's work. Below, you can see many lines representing interactions between editors in a discussion section; thicker lines represent more interactions, and red indicates negative opinions. Clearly the individuals at 11 and 3 o' clock have contributed more than their fair share to the discussion, and appear to be mostly?yammering at each other.

• In theory, many articles initially considered to be controversial would level out in terms of edit rate, and over time crystallize - but only if no new events spark further interest. Below, you can see a graph of the total number of edits to Michael Jackson's entry, with salient points marked such as his acquittal?(A)?and death (D). Other highly edited entries showed similar signs of flattening out, but often would surge into action again following key events. The pace of news, not to mention the frequent arrival of opinionated editors, renders peace a forlorn hope.

If you're interested in the methodology and math behind these interesting points, you can read the entire paper online at PLoS One, but you'll need a solid foundation of statistics to understand it. On the other hand, you can investigate the topic yourself by going to any Wikipedia page and clicking the "Talk" or "View history" buttons at the top. The discussion of the entry can at times be as worthwhile to read as the entry itself.

It's well-known that information on Wikipedia is essentially peer-reviewed opinion, and this study shows just how lively?those peers ??and that review process???can be. But while the details are constantly under heated debate, the result is often a compromise that cleaves very closely to fact, despite being the middle ground between several ideas of the truth.

Samsonite recalls luggage range worldwide over cancer fears

HONG KONG: U.S. company Samsonite said Tuesday it was pulling its Tokyo Chic luggage from stores worldwide after a Hong Kong consumer group found parts contained high levels of chemicals that may cause cancer.

The move was initially limited to Hong Kong, but the company said the entire inventory of its American Tourister brand?s Tokyo Chic luggage would now be withdrawn from shelves ?everywhere the product is sold.?

The recall would allow the Hong Kong-listed company to replace side-carrying handles containing Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons with ?new-generation handles.?

Samsonite President for Asia-Pacific and the Middle East Ramesh Tainwala said the move followed a report by the Hong Kong Consumer Council last week saying certain Samsonite suitcases contained unsafe levels of PAH.

The Consumer Council said the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department had advised agents for suitcases with high PAH levels to ?stop the sales of the concerned model and to replace the handles.?

Tainwala said the company?s tests found PAH levels that were ?significantly lower? than those reported by the Consumer Council, and there were no health concerns associated with the company?s products.

?What matters to us above all else is that consumers have the best possible experience with our products ... We want our customers to enjoy their Samsonite luggage and to have the utmost of confidence in its functionality, design and safety,? she said.

She added that while Tokyo Chic luggage is ?completely safe,? customers who have purchased one of the suitcases could contact the company and have the handles replaced.

Samsonite shares climbed more than eight percent Monday but were 0.2 percent weaker at the close of trade Tuesday. The company announced the recall after the close.
