(AP) ? Japanese video game maker Nintendo Co. returned to the black for the first nine months of its business year and more than doubled its profit forecast for the full year, getting a perk from a weaker yen, despite pessimism about sales prospects.

April-December profit for the Kyoto-based maker of Super Mario and Pokemon games totaled 14.55 billion yen ($160 million), bouncing back from the 48.35 billion yen loss reported a year earlier, it said Wednesday. Nine-month sales inched up 2.4 percent to 543 billion yen ($6 billion).

Nintendo raised its profit forecast for the business year through March 2013 to 14 billion yen ($154 million) from 6 billion yen ($66 million). The dollar has strengthened about 14 percent against the yen in the past three months on expectations a new government would relax monetary policy to boost Japan's moribund economy.

But Nintendo, which didn't break down quarterly results, isn't upbeat about its sales prospects and lowered its full year sales forecast to 670 billion yen ($7.4 billion) from 810 billion yen ($8.9 billion).

Game machines have taken a beating from the proliferation of smartphones and tablets that also offer games and other entertainment, competing for people's leisure time. Some analysts say the global market for game machines is saturated with offerings from Nintendo, Microsoft Corp., Sony Corp. and others.

Nintendo spokesman Makoto Wakae said sales had gone relatively well during the key holiday shopping season late last year, but that was quickly running out of momentum. The company expects to post an operating loss for the year ending March 2013, the second straight year of operating losses, he said.

The company forecasts it will sell 4 million Wii U consoles for the fiscal year, down from its earlier estimate of 5.5 million units. The Wii U, which went on sale late last year, was the first major new game console to arrive in stores in years.

Nintendo, also behind the Donkey Kong and Zelda games, lowered its full year sales forecast for Wii U game software units to 16 million from 24 million.

Nintendo's success was rooted in its appeal to so-called casual gamers, but they may be the kind of people for whom smartphones and iPads are proving attractive alternatives.

What's coming as a godsend for Nintendo is the weakening yen, against both the dollar and the euro, as that helps raise the value of its overseas earnings. Currency gains for the period totaled 22 billion yen ($242 million), according to Nintendo.

Nintendo has a lot riding on the Wii U, which has a touch-screen tablet controller called GamePad and a TV-watching feature called TVii. Nintendo said it sold 3 million Wii U machines so far around the world.

Nintendo sank into a loss the previous fiscal year largely because of price cuts for its hand-held 3DS game machine, which shows three-dimensional imagery without special glasses. It has sold nearly 30 million 3DS machines so far.

In Defense of the Manny

Male babysitter and baby. Manny and baby

When my husband and I toured a preschool last week, the owner told me that her husband, a classical musician, sometimes pops in to play piano for the kids. I assumed she was trying to impress us?what parent doesn?t want a little extra Bach in her child?s life??but then she explained, nervously, that she was telling us because she felt she had to. Might the occasional presence of a penis, her look implied, put us off from her preschool?

Should it? Our son?s current day care is run by a man, and our go-to date night baby sitters are named Matt and Eric. But the more people I talk to and the more things I read, the more I realize that many parents are uncomfortable, or at least much less comfortable, hiring men for child care positions, even if they have the same experience and qualifications. But is this cultural uneasiness fair? Is it based in fact, or is it the product of fear (of molestation, of male ineptitude)? Is it sexism?

There are, of course, good reasons to hire female baby sitters. Because they?re in demand, women typically have more experience than men do. And most of us were raised by women?not just our stay-at-home moms but also the women who dominated our day care environments and preschools and elementary schools, so it makes sense that we choose women to care for our kids. (Things haven?t changed much since I was young: In 2011, only 5.5 percent of U.S. child care workers and 3.3 percent of preschool and kindergarten teachers were men. Male caregivers, jokingly/derisively referred to as mannies these days, have a hard time making a living.)

If you crunch the numbers on abuse, women are a safer choice, too. According to a U.S. Department of Justice report from 2001 (unfortunately the most recent statistics on baby sitter crimes), male baby sitters are three times more likely than female baby sitters to sexually abuse the children they care for. (When it comes to physical abuse, female baby sitters are more frequently implicated, but since most baby sitters are women, this fact isn?t surprising.) Actual baby sitter crime rates are low, though. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, in 2011, only 0.4 percent of all child abuse perpetrators were day care providers or baby sitters. (And overall, child abusers are more likely to be female than male.)

Plus, many sexual abuse allegations against caregivers are false. In 1983, a mother accused Ray Buckey, a young man working in a preschool in California, of molesting her 2 ?-year-old son. The accusation landed Buckey in prison for five years, caused seven other employees to get indicted, and resulted in what was, at the time, the longest and most expensive criminal trial in American history. After interviewing and examining more than 400 children who had attended the preschool, doctors and psychologists diagnosed 384 as having been sexually abused. And then ? all charges were dismissed; as it turned out, the mother who made the initial accusations suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. But by that point, fears over ritual abuse were sweeping the country (and eventually the world), and between 1983 and 1991, the U.S. government investigated more than 100 U.S. schools and centers for allegations of satanic ritual abuse in what has been called a ?modern American witch hunt.? A study that analyzed 12 of the most famous cases found that, out of 22 defendants that were tried, 15 were found guilty. All but three of these verdicts were later overturned.

Not all parents are afraid of abuse, of course. Some simply don?t trust men to dote on their kids like women do, even as fathers take on a much greater child care role in many households these days. One dad, a friend of a friend, explained it to me this way: ?If my wife and I had doppelg?ngers, I'd feel better if our child was with doppelg?nger Katie than with doppelg?nger Brady; doppelg?nger Brady?would just be a little neglectful by comparison.? I get it: My son is about three times more likely to come home from the playground with a bloody nose if he goes with my husband than with me. At the same time, recent research suggests that daddy time is great for kids precisely because male parenting styles promote independence and risk-taking. In 2012, the London Early Years Foundation, a charity that provides child care services throughout London, interviewed its (mostly female) staff and found that 75 percent believed that male workers offer kids something that the female workers don?t, including different perspectives and, yes, better fantasy superhero play.??

Another oft-mentioned ?reason? for avoiding mannies or other male child care workers is the very logical I just don?t get why a guy would want to do a job like that. In other words, there?s got to be something wrong with a man who wants to spend all day looking after other people?s kids. The implication here (apart from that men who like kids must be pedophiles) is that men don?t belong in child care, perhaps because they more naturally belong in other professions?more obviously ?masculine? career-oriented jobs.

This bias against men is a bias against women, too: It re-affirms the woman?s fixed position in society as much as the man?s. According to Indiana University sociologist Stephen Benard, dominant social groups are usually stereotyped as competent, intelligent, and confident, while subordinate groups are considered warm, kind, and caring. In our society, these two poles describe men and women. Since women are the ?caring? sex, we consider them to be the obvious choice for child care?but in doing so, we are (perhaps subconsciously) characterizing them as subordinate. And in fact, when men do work in preschools or day care centers, they usually get promoted to director positions much more quickly than women do, in what University of Texas sociologist Christine Williams calls the ?glass escalator? effect.

That?s not to say men working in child care have an easy time. ?As a male in the infant-toddler room, it seems as if I am held to a higher standard by the parents,? describes one part-time employee. Some say they are not allowed to change diapers, while others make sure they are never, ever left alone with children, because they fear that parents would get suspicious. But parents do sometimes get used to the idea. A few years ago, 4 out of 5 employees in one of the day care centers run by the London Early Years Foundation were men. (England and Germany, unlike the United States, are pushing to get more men into child care.) ?We wondered what the parents would do,? explains foundation CEO June O?Sullivan. ?There was a little bit of anxiety to start with, but once the parents got familiar with the team, they were fantastic.?

The best thing we can do as parents is to stay open-minded about whom we hire and also be thorough in our background checks of all potential child care candidates. For my part, I know I can?t control what my son thinks, but I can change what he sees, and I want him to see a world in which, yes, women and men can both hold high-paying executive jobs. But they can both teach preschool and baby-sit him, too. Matt and Eric are awesome.

In addition to the sources mentioned, The Kids would like to thank Susan Murray from San Jose State University, David Finkelhor from the University of New Hampshire, and Sandi McLeod from the Child Welfare Information Gateway.

One more surgery for Malala Yousufzai

LONDON (AP) ? A Pakistani girl whose defiance of the Taliban turned her into an international icon is headed toward recovery once she undergoes a final surgery to reconstruct her skull, doctors said Wednesday.

Dr. Dave Rosser of Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital said that 15-year-old Malala Yousufzai needs the operation to replace the bone shattered when a Taliban gunman, angered at her objection to the group's restrictions on girls' education, sent a bullet through her skull. Rosser said that Malala had made a "remarkable recovery."

"She's very lively, she's got a great sense of humor," Rosser told journalists at the hospital. "She's not naive at all about what happened to her and the situation she's looking forward to in terms of being a high-profile person, and potentially a high-profile target. She's not naive to any of that, but she remains incredibly determined, incredibly cheerful and incredibly determined to speak for her cause."

That cause has turned Malala into a symbol for a girl's right to an education.

At the age of 11, she began writing a blog under a pseudonym for the BBC about life under the Taliban in Pakistan's picturesque Swat Valley, which Taliban militants briefly overran. After the military ousted them in 2009, she began publicly speaking out about the need for girls' education. She appeared frequently in the media and was given one of the country's highest civilian honors for her bravery.

Malala was shot on Oct. 9 as she headed home from school. The Taliban said they targeted her because she promoted "Western thinking," but the attempt to murder a teenage girl over her desire to go to school sent a wave of revulsion around the world. Amid a blaze of publicity over her plight, Malala was flown to England for advanced medical care ? and for her own protection.

There was no indication Wednesday of whether or when she would return to Pakistan, although Rosser said it would likely be a year or 18 months before she has finished recuperating.

"Anybody who's required a lengthy intensive care stay or undergone significant neurological injuries, studies tell us people don't report feeling as well as they used to for 15 to 18 months," he said.

Rosser went on to give a detailed briefing of what Malala could expect from the surgery, planned for some time within the next two weeks. He said doctors also have to remove a piece of Malala's skull that they had surgically inserted into her abdomen ? a common procedure intended to keep the skull fragment from getting infected. Eventually, however, surgeons opted for a titanium plate to cover the hole.

A cochlear implant is also being implanted and will be turned on in about a month's time. Rosser said it should eventually restore her full hearing.

Asked whether Malala showed any signs of brain damage ? such as memory loss or hormonal changes ? Rosser said doctors had seen none.

Barring any complications, he said the skull reconstruction should be Malala's final surgery.

"She's certainly pleased with the thought that this will be the end of it," Rosser said.

Study finds improvement in German consumer mood

(AP) ? A closely-watched survey shows German consumers are more optimistic, buoyed by the current calm in financial markets and expectations the economy will gradually revive over the course of the year.

The GfK institute reported Tuesday that its forward-looking indicator rose to 5.8 points for January, up from a revised 5.7 in January.

Analyst Carsten Brzeski says the indicator is "another small piece of evidence that domestic demand should be an important growth driver in 2013."

The report shows overall economic expectations still in negative territory, at minus 11.3 in January ? but that was an improvement from December's minus 17.9.

Income expectations rose to 36 in January from 21.2 in December, while consumers' willingness to buy was up to 35.3 from 20.1.

The report is based on 2,000 consumer interviews.

Human brain model and graphene win science's X Factor

What to do with a cool ?1 billion? How about "build a CERN for the brain"?

That's what Henry Markram, director of the Human Brain Project (HBP), intends to do now that the project has won one of two ?1 billion European research prizes, to be paid out over the next 10 years. The other winner is a project that aims to unlock the potential of supermaterial graphene.

The HBP is a quest to simulate a brain in a supercomputer. It is the successor to the Blue Brain Project, which kicked off in 2005 and succeeded in modelling the cortical column of a rat brain on a cellular level. According to a project spokesperson from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, the next stage is to move on to the human brain. This will involving "expanding in all directions" and making the models bigger and more detailed.

The hope is that the model, once built, will be used to identify biomarkers that could be used to diagnose neurodegenerative diseases, to test combinations of different drugs and to help build neuromorphic computers based on components found in the brain. Researchers from around the world will be able to use the simulation in a similar way to how astronomers would reserve observation time on a telescope.

Flexible conductor

The goal of the graphene project is to take advantage of the exotic properties of the one-atom-thick wonder material that won its creators the 2010 physics Nobel prize. Jari Kinaret of Chalmers University in Gothenburg, Sweden, says that the flexible conductor will be used to make electronic paper, printed electronics and new kinds of personal communications devices such as those integrated into clothing.

Also on the to-do list are batteries for electric vehicles, lightweight medical implants made out of graphene nanocomposites and solar cells that take advantage of the material's ability to conduct light as well as electricity.

"The first products seen on market will be a golf club or tennis racket. This won't take 10 years," says Kinaret. "This was one of the strengths of our proposal ? there is low-hanging fruit as well as long-term goals."

Today's announcement of the winners is the culmination of a European Commission competition, dubbed science's X Factor, that started in 2010, when the EC put out a call for computing projects of a visionary scale. Each winner is supposed to receive ?1 billion over 10 years, half from the EC and half from European countries and private companies.

Four other projects made it through to the final round and most plan to continue with their proposals in some form. "We are exploring options," says Dirk Helbing, one of the directors of FuturICT, a project to build a real-time, global civilisation simulation. "The FuturICT idea will live on. It's more a question how big will Europe's piece of the cake be, that European scientists have baked."

16 sick in 5 states; linked to ground beef recall

(AP) ? Federal health officials say at least 16 people in five states have been sickened by salmonella food poisoning linked to ground beef.

No one has died, but half were hospitalized. Most of the illnesses have been in Michigan, but a few cases were scattered in Arizona, Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin.

Seven people ate a raw ground beef dish called kibbeh (kib-BEH') last month at a suburban Detroit restaurant that wasn't identified. Health officials say consumers should not eat uncooked meat.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the cases have been linked to last week's recall of more than 1,000 pounds of ground beef from two Michigan businesses, Troy-based Gab Halal Foods and Sterling Heights-based Jouni Meats.

Anglo American takes $4 billion hit on Minas-Rio

LONDON (Reuters) - Anglo American will take a $4 billion writedown on its Minas-Rio iron ore project in Brazil after delays and cost overruns forced the mining group to increase expenditure on the project.

The company said on Thursday that it expects capital expenditure for the project to increase to $8.8 billion.

"We are clearly disappointed that the diversity of challenges that our Minas-Rio project has faced has contributed to a significant increase in capital expenditure," outgoing Chief Executive Cynthia Carroll said.

"Despite the difficulties, we continue to be confident of the medium and long-term attractiveness and strategic positioning of Minas-Rio and we remain committed to the project."

Minas-Rio, a leading iron ore project in Brazil, is one of Anglo's most significant capital allocation failures of recent years and was largely responsible for Carroll's fall from grace. Anglo bought its first stake in Minas-Rio in 2007, taking control in 2008 with a $5.5 billion deal with Brazilian billionaire Eike Batista's MMX - right at its peak.

The project was intended to help to diversify a company that was still dependent on South Africa for the bulk of its revenue, but has instead been a bruising top-of-the-market deal.

Anglo spent $4.8 billion buying Minas Rio - excluding the value of the Amapa mine, bought as part of the original deal but which Anglo has agreed to sell. It has spent $5 billion on developing it so far and said last year that total development costs could exceed $8 billion - more than three times original estimates.

Development costs in Brazil have been driven higher by issues such as the Olympics and the soccer World Cup, which have increased demand for labour.

Anglo is not the only company to have met with permitting hiccups in Brazil, with even Vale, the world's largest iron ore producer, being hit and ENRC's project there.

The company said it is still targeting first ore on ship by the end of 2014 despite the challenges facing Minas-Rio.

Local fire departments to get pet oxygen masks for rescuing cats and ...

Last August, Saline firefighters and Huron Valley Ambulance paramedics rescued a cat from a fire and saved its life using special animal rescue equipment. On Feb. 5, the Washtenaw County office of Paul Davis Restoration & Remodeling will donate the same pet oxygen mask kits to the Washtenaw Area Mutual Aid Association for distribution to local fire departments.

The masks come in three different sizes for large, medium and small pets. They will be donated during every month in 2013 and distributed to local fire departments that don't already own them.

"These masks are specifically designed to fit over the muzzle of an animal and allow animals to receive pure oxygen after exposure to a fire and smoke inhalation," said Brian McCall, who owns the local Paul Davis Restoration office.

Saline Area Fire Chief Craig Hoeft has seen the masks in use.

"A couple of years ago, we had a house fire with several pets involved," said Hoeft. "We had HVA assist us, and they gave oxygen to the pets but didn't have masks specifically made for the pets. The human masks don't work as well."

Mobile veterinarian Dr. Katheryn VanKoevering donated masks for pets to the Saline Area Fire Deparment and trained firefighters on how to use them. Hoeft says the masks are contoured to the shape and size of cats' and dogs' faces.

"At a house fire last August in Saline, HVA paramedics saved a cat using a pet oxygen mask," said Hoeft. "The donation of these masks is a great thing."

The mask kits will be presented to HVA Feb. 5.

Vietnam tries 22 democracy activists on subversion

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) ? A Vietnamese court has begun the trial of 22 democracy activists on charges of plotting to overthrow the Communist government in one of the biggest such trials in years.

A court official in central Phu Yen province says the defendants appeared in court Monday. The official didn't give his name, citing government policy.

He says the trial could last five days.

State-controlled media have quoted the indictment as saying the group operated under the cover of an ecotourism company. The media say the group allegedly authored documents that distorted Communist Party policies to create distrust.

The government appears to be stepping up its campaign on dissidents despite criticism from Western governments.

Earlier this month, 14 activists were sentenced to up to 13 years.

Powers of prophesy: Davos looks to the future

(AP) ? Forget the endless debates about the euro or government debts. What does the future hold?

The World Economic Forum at Davos is always a showcase for new research, trends and ideas. And those at the annual gathering of the world's elite don't shy away from making predictions, even if they missed foreseeing seminal events like the Great Recession or the Arab Spring revolts.

Here are some predictions from this year's participants:

WEATHER AND WATER

Climate change will lead to more and more extreme weather, which will cause tremendous economic upheaval, predicts New York University economist Nouriel Roubini.

"It's not just that New York is going to be underwater 30 years from now," he said, referring to the devastation caused last fall by Hurricane Sandy.

Oxford University physicist Tim Palmer ? who said as a scientist he preferred probabilities to prediction ? noted there is a 10- to 15-percent chance that the Earth will warm by 6 degrees Celsius within a century, leading to "catastrophic consequences for humanity" ranging from extreme weather to rising seas.

Vali Nasr, dean of the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, said many countries will start running out of water in the coming years.

"Water is the new oil," he said.

A TECHNOLOGICAL SURGE

Laura Tyson, a business professor at the University of California at Berkeley, said one of the great concerns should be "the employment effects of technology," with so many jobs being rendered obsolete by scientific or technological advances.

Discussions of such advances were everywhere at Davos.

Sebastian Thrun, a computer science professor at Stanford University and leader of Google's Self-Driving Car Project, said he thinks Google co-founder Sergey Brin's prediction that within five years driverless cars will be on the streets used by regular people is going to happen.

"It'll be a while before they're going to be mainstream, and there'll be all kinds of interesting questions coming about security, privacy, safety of the system as a whole," Thrun said. "But if they are available within five years for general consumers, I think within 15 years you ought to be able to buy one of those."

MENTAL ILLNESS UNDERSTOOD

Edward Boyden, an associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who directs a neural engineering research group, says new technologies for analyzing the brain will produce significant advances in fighting mental illness.

"Right now we know that certain cell types in the brain are impaired in schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder or autism," he said.

If scientists can develop new technologies to image the brain and control the brain's cells, he said "over the next half-century or so we should be able to really understand how these networks" generate emotion.

Then, in the case of mental illness, "we can insert information into the cells in order to re-sculpt their dynamics and fix what's broken," Boyden said.

Technology entrepreneur Eric Anderson said biotechnology and medicine "are eventually going to be information sciences, with your genes... will determine treatment."

THE LIGHTEST STUFF

Julia Greer, an assistant professor of materials science and mechanics at the California Institute of Technology, says the world is craving a useful, ultra-superlight material to work with.

Her research group collaborated with Hughes Research Lab (HRL) and the University of California, Irvine, to recently develop the world's lightest solid material. She predicted that in 10 to 15 years it will be used as fuel cell catalysts, as acoustic damping devices on submarines, as anti-reflective layers in solar cells, and as components of vehicles sent into space.

The new material, called a micro-lattice, is made up of tiny hollow tubes of nickel-phosphorous that are angled to connect ? and contains 99 percent air, Greer said. It can also be used for high-temperature thermal batteries, heart stents and blood clot catchers, she said.

On a related topic, Roy Johnson, the chief technology officer for Lockheed Martin, predicted huge advances in 3-D printing.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE

One of the most famous predictions is Moore's Law, named after Intel co-founder Gordon Moore, which says that computing power doubles every two years or so. It has proven stunningly correct so far, putting new technological devices in everyone's pockets.

But how long will this law hold? Paul Jacobs, the CEO of Qualcomm, said it's not so certain anymore.

The implications of effectively infinite computing power are staggering ? no more waiting for a power-up or a download; every song, movie and TV episode instantly available; and even the possibility of what scientists call artificial intelligence.

But Jacobs told The Associated Press that the law might be valid only "a couple of more generations."

"I'm worried. In the next couple of nodes we're going to stop getting those numbers unless somebody figures out something," he said.

YOUTH OF THE WORLD UNITE

Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, now the U.N. special envoy for global education, said huge advances in the Internet and technology are enabling young people to connect with each other and "this is opening up the world in a way that has never happened before."

"Young people are beginning to see that the gap between the opportunities and rights they have been promised and the opportunities and rights that are delivered to them is wholly unacceptable," he said at a session on the forum's sidelines. "And the sense that they are being deprived of these opportunities and rights is, I think, going to be the big motivating force over the next few years."

Managua makes top 100 outsourcing destinations | PRLog

?

PRLog (Press Release) - Jan. 25, 2013 - Managua, Nicaragua?s capital city, was recently added to Tholons? list of Top 100 Outsourcing Destinations, thanks to its improved infrastructure, competitive costs, a skilled bilingual workforce and an attractive geographical location. According to the referential list, Managua ranks one position above Guatemala City, which also makes its first appearance on Tholons? 2013 index.

Nicaragua is now on the map and getting its due as an up-and-comer in the industry with major players such as Sitel, 24/7 Customer and Stream Global Services, Managua.

Javier Chamorro, Executive Director of PRONicaragua, the official investment promotion agency, says Nicaragua is satisfied with its recognition as an emerging industry player. Nicaragua?s initial call-center growth with 25 companies that have altogether employed nearly 5,000 Nicaraguans over the past seven year, has been impressive and augurs well for the future of the business process outsourcing industry here.

?Being listed in the Top 100 Outsourcing Destinations implies that international experts in the industry recognize the country as a world-renowned destination for outsourcing, still above other countries in the region such as El Salvador and Guatemala, which started developing the sector years before Nicaragua,? Chamorro told The Nicaragua Dispatch.

He also added, ?this means that the country is attracting the right attention and stands out as an emerging destination due to the excellent investment opportunities it offers to companies looking to expand their operations and increase their global competitiveness.?

And when it comes to global competitiveness, Nicaragua has several advantages of its own, Chamorro says.

?Among the country?s main competitive advantages for the sector is its strategic location, close to the largest outsourcing market in the world, the U.S.,? Chamorro says. Plus, he adds, Nicaragua has a young and vibrant workforce that ?not only speaks good quality English, but has a cultural affinity with the market due to the ?reverse brain drain? phenomenon, which refers to people who left the country in the past and have returned to Nicaragua with English skills and market knowledge.?

The country?s ?greatest advantages,? however, are its cheap labor costs and generous tax incentives for outsourcing. ?It is because of this that Nicaragua is able to compete with the global players in the industry, as it offers lower costs with a near shore location, allowing it to provide timely services to the United States without losing valuable working hours,? Chamorro says.

(AP) ? Tens of thousands of mourners poured into the streets of the restive Egyptian city of Port Said on Sunday for a mass funeral for most of the 37 people killed in rioting a day earlier, chanting slogans against Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

Violence erupted briefly when some in the crowd fired guns and police responded with volleys of tear gas, witnesses said. State television reported 110 were injured.

"We are very worried about what may happen after the burial," said local youth activist Rasha Hamouda, noting the city was fraught with tension.

There was also a funeral in Cairo for one of two policemen killed in the Port Said violence a day earlier. Several policemen grieving for two colleagues heckled Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim, who is in charge of the force, when he arrived for their funeral, according to witnesses. The angry officers screamed at the minister that he was only at the funeral for the TV cameras ? a highly unusual show of dissent in Egypt, where the police force maintains military-like discipline.

Ibrahim hurriedly left and the funeral proceeded without him.

The violence in the city, about 140 miles northeast of Cairo, broke out on Saturday after a court on Saturday convicted and sentenced 21 defendants to death for their roles in a mass soccer riot in a Port Said stadium on Feb. 1, 2012 that left 74 people dead. Most of those sentenced to death were local soccer fans from Port Said. The 21 were convicted on murder charges and the court is to rule on the remainder of the 73 defendants in March.

The riots stemmed mostly from animosity between police and die-hard Egyptian soccer fans, known as Ultras, who have become highly politicized. The Ultras frequently confront police and were also part of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak's regime two years ago.

They were also at the forefront of protests against the military rulers who took over from Mubarak and are now again on the front lines of protests against the Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, the country's first freely elected leader.

Mourners chanted "There is no God but Allah," and "Morsi is God's enemy" as the funeral procession made its way through the city after prayers for the dead at the city's Mariam Mosque. Women clad in black led the chants, which were quickly picked up by the rest of the mourners.

There were no police or army troops in sight. But the funeral procession briefly halted after gunfire rang out. Security officials said the gunfire came from several mourners who opened fire at the Police Club next to the cemetery.

A witness said the police responded to the gunfire with volleys of tear gas. The witness and the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation in the city on the Mediterranean at the northern tip of the Suez Canal.

Survivors and witnesses of the Port Said soccer melee blame Mubarak loyalists for the violence, saying they had a hand in instigating the killings. The troubles erupted after Port Said's home team Al-Masry beat Cairo's Al-Ahly 3-1. Some witnesses said "hired thugs" wearing green T-shirts and posing as Al-Masry fans led the attacks.

Other witnesses said at the very least, police were responsible for gross negligence in the soccer violence, which killed 74 people, most of them Al-Ahly fans.

Anger at police was evident in Port Said, home to most of the 73 men accused of involvement in the bloodshed.

The trial was in Cairo and Judge Sobhi Abdel-Maguid did not give his reasoning when he handed down the guilty verdicts and sentences for 21 defendants. Executions in Egypt are usually carried out by hanging.

Verdicts for the remaining 52 defendants, including nine security officials, are to be delivered on March 9. Some have been charged with murder and others with assisting the attackers. All the defendants ? who were not present in the courtroom Saturday for security reasons ? can appeal the verdict.

In Port Said on Sunday, army troops backed by armored vehicles staked out positions at key government facilities to protect state interests and try to restore order.

The military issued a statement urging Port Said residents to exercise restraint and protect public property, but also warning that troops would deal "firmly" with anyone who "terrorizes" citizens or infringes upon the nation's security and stability.

Rioters on Saturday attacked the prison where the defendants were being held and tried to storm police stations and government offices around the city. Health officials say at least 37 people were killed, including two policemen, in rioting on Saturday.

The clashes in Port Said were the latest in a bout of unrest across the country that has left a total of 48 people dead since Friday. That death toll includes 11 people killed in clashes between police and protesters marking the second anniversary of the uprising that overthrew Mubarak after nearly 30 years of authoritarian rule.

Clashes broke out in Cairo for the fourth straight day on Sunday, with protesters and police near central Tahrir Square, birthplace of the 2011 uprising. Police fired tear gas while protesters pelted them with rocks.

The clashes show how turmoil was deepening in Egypt nearly seven months after Morsi took office. Critics say Morsi has failed to carry out promised reforms of the judiciary and police, and claim little has improved in the two years since the uprising.

At the heart of the rising opposition toward Morsi's government is a newly adopted constitution, which was ratified in a nationwide referendum.

Opponents claim the document has an Islamist slant. It was drafted hurriedly by the president's allies without the participation of representatives of liberals and minority Christians on the panel that wrote the charter.

Protesters on the streets this past week demanded the formation of a national unity government, early presidential elections and amendments to disputed clauses in the constitution.

Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist group from which he hails, counter that the opposition was seeking to overturn the results of democratic and free elections. The Brotherhood, a well-organized and established political group in Egypt for decades, has emerged as by far the most powerful force in post-Mubarak Egypt.

As the situation in Port Said spiraled out of control Saturday, police disappeared from the city's streets, residents and security officials said, staying put in their camps, police stations and the city's security headquarters.

The military then dispatched troops to the city, taking up positions at vital state facilities, including the local power and water stations, the city's main courthouse, the local government building and the city prison. Navy sailors were guarding the local offices of the Suez Canal company.

Navy vessels were escorting merchant ships sailing through the international waterway, a vital income earner for Egypt's beleaguered economy. Military helicopters were flying over the canal to ensure the safety of shipping, according to Suez Canal spokesman Tareq Hassanein.

Residents said Port Said was quiet overnight except for intermittent bursts of gunfire. The city was still on edge early Sunday ? but streets were largely deserted, stores were closed for the second successive day, and some hotels asked guests to leave, fearing more violence.

Web founder Berners-Lee: Governments are suppressing online ...

By Agence France-Presse
Friday, January 25, 2013 14:44 EST

?

The inventor of the World Wide Web warned Friday that government control is limiting the possibilities of the Internet, as dozens of countries and businesses signed a cybersecurity deal at the Davos forum.

The comments by Tim Berners-Lee at the World Economic Forum plugged into a wider debate among the delegates on the future of the Internet, particularly how to balance openness with privacy and security.

While Yahoo!?s chief Marissa Mayer told the forum there was a ?trade off? between privacy and the benefits of increasingly personalised services offered by Internet giants, the network?s founding father took up the ethical issues at stake.

?The dream is of a more open web,? Berners-Lee told the gathering in the Swiss ski resort, citing social media as a way of breaking down barriers.

But he said the recent suicide of Aaron Swartz, a 26-year-old US Internet activist who faced charges of illegally copying and distributing millions of academic articles, highlighted government efforts to police the Internet.

?He downloaded a lot and so the secret service in the US decided that he was a hacker. For them that isn?t the term of great praise that it is when I use it. For me a hacker is someone who is creative and does wonderful things,? he said.

Berners-Lee ? who launched the first web page on Christmas Day 1990 and is is credited with creating the World Wide Web ? called on international governments to release more data, saying that others could use it to find solutions to problems including economic and health issues.

?They can give you 101 reasons for not doing it but it comes down to control,? the Briton told the forum.

But Yahoo! CEO Mayer had a different take when it came to data about individual users held by companies such as hers and by other Internet giants such as Facebook and Google.

?I think that privacy will always be something that users should consider. But I also think that privacy is a trade off,? she said.

?Because where you give that personal information you get functionality in return.?

Mayer, 37, who took over in July at Yahoo! after 13 years at Google in a move aimed at reinvigorating the faded Internet firm, said the future lay in the increased ?personalisation? of the web.

She predicted the dominance in coming years of handheld Internet devices to take personalised content.

?It?s really important if you look at what?s happening in terms of the shift to mobile,? she said, saying that the number of tablets and smartphones had tripled in five years and that tablets would outsell laptops this year.

But she added: ?The real question is making money from it.?

For government leaders at Davos the topic was about how to harness the power of the Internet to boost the global economy ? while also maintaining security against fraud and terrorism.

More than 70 companies and government bodies officially signed up to the World Economic Forum?s new ?Cyber Resilience? principles on Friday aimed at tackling the issue.

Speaking at Davos on Friday, British cybersecurity minister Francis Maude said a ?safe and secure? Internet was necessary to help business thrive.

?Cyber security is a shared, global challenge ? our companies operate in a global marketplace. The cyber threat knows no geographical boundaries and it matters that those we connect to are secure as well,? Maude said.

Separately Neelie Kroes, the European Union?s telecommunications commissioner, was at Davos to appeal to companies and governments to improve the technological skills of young Europeans to compete with the rest of the world.

?The digital skills gap is growing, like our unemployment queues,? she said, adding that the information technology sector was out of recession and growing seven times faster than other sectors.

Berners-Lee agreed, saying that the world economy needed ?more people who can program? and that in the Internet age children should be taught how to use computers from an early age.

But he added: ?Computers are important, but young people should study history and art and music and things.?

Customer service must be a deliberate strategy ? IT Business Blogs ...

Image: VM Associates

By Francis Moran

I had a conversation the other day with a senior executive at a company for which I?occasionally?do some consulting. The executive wanted my opinion on how his company handles warranty returns. Under their current practice, they oblige their customers to remove the faulty equipment, which is often tightly embedded in an operational environment, pack it up as best they can with their own resources, and ship it back at the customer?s expense. If the fault is determined to be covered under warranty, they refund the customer?s shipping costs. Meanwhile, the customer may have to do without what is often a mission-critical piece of gear, although most of this company?s customers do stock healthy inventories of spare equipment.

This approach to handling repairs and returns is not such an unusual situation. Several years ago, my laptop needed repair for something that was covered by warranty. Not having sprung for the expensive extended warranty that would have the manufacturer send a repair guy to me, I had to package up my laptop and ship it to their repair facility. I covered the shipping at the time, although this cost was refunded to me when the defect was determined to be covered by warranty. However, I was without my laptop for about a fortnight, and I did have the not-insubstantial inconvenience of scrounging up a suitable shipping container and so on.

Now, contrast that with my experience with a Palm device that also needed a repair. Palm shipped me a temporary replacement to which I could transfer all my stuff so I would not be without my smartphone. It came with a shipping container and mailing label I could use to send the defective device back. Palm?s intent was to repair the phone and return it to me, again including a shipping container I could then use to send the replacement back. In the end, Palm determined the broken phone wasn?t worth fixing and I was told to keep the replacement.

This is a big part of the reason I was such a huge fan of Palm devices, loyally buying their next new thing through three or four generations of device over about an eight-year period.

Similarly, shortly after moving in to a new house, I dropped a piece of equipment from the automatic?pool cleaner onto the deck and it broke. I called the manufacturer and, notwithstanding I couldn?t tell them how old the gear was or whether it was still covered by warranty ? and I certainly wasn?t the original purchaser to whom most warranties are limited ? they shipped me out a replacement part. By overnight courier. At no cost to me.

It wasn?t an expensive part, but they sure did knock my socks off with their uncompromising devotion to customer satisfaction. The following year, when I wanted to install a salt-water chlorination system, which manufacturer do you think got my business practically by default? For a few dollars worth of parts and the cost of a FedEx package, these guys earned a $5,000 sale, plus regular $400 replacement chlorine-generator cells every three or four years, and have me as a customer for life. That means that, eight years later, with that automatic pool cleaner definitely on its last legs, I really wouldn?t think of going anywhere else when I replace it this spring. (I can?t help adding that spring and pool season seem an awfully long way away as I write this in the middle of an extended Ottawa winter deep freeze. Brrr.)

There?s no right way or wrong way

Here?s the thing. There?s no right way or wrong way to go here. There?s only a business-case way. As with my laptop company, it just might not make good business sense to handle things any differently. But I would argue that in most instances, there is a very strong business case to be made for going the extra mile. Or even half a mile.

For example, how tough would it be for the company I referenced at the top of this article to make pre-paid shipping labels available that its customers could download, print out and apply to the outside of the packages containing broken equipment? This falls a long way short of Palm?s expensive gold standard of shipping out a replacement unit before getting the original gear returned but it makes the process a heck of a lot less cumbersome for your customer. And there?s no risk here for the company. If the defect turns out not to be covered by warranty, it?s easy to have terms and conditions that say shipping and handling costs will be added to the repair bill.

The point I?m trying to make is that how you approach customer service ought to be a strategic decision that is carefully and deliberately made. I doubt my sometime client ever consciously considered the implications of how it treats its customers with warranty returns until that senior executive started asking questions. Given that the cost of acquiring new customers is generally held to be much higher than the cost of retaining existing ones, what is the appropriate level of investment in customer satisfaction? Does it really lead to more sales? Does it convey a sustainable competitive advantage? (I have regularly argued on this blog that superior customer service is so critical I call it ?Francis?s first law of competitive differentiation.?) How can these things be quantified, tracked and evaluated?

Bottom line: Don?t allow truly superior customer service to become an unintended casualty of what might otherwise seem to be a reasonable operating procedure.

Creating Conversion Out of Content - YouMoz | SEOmoz

fishingin Bangladesh

In a recent post on the Ascent Internet blog, I laid out the case for compelling Web content from a marketing standpoint. However, having targeted, high quality content is not enough for a website - you need tools to capture the users of your content.

It has been said that content is king on the Web but converting users to buyers or qualified prospects that you can continue to retarget is usually a website's goal.

Before crafting calls to action, it's important to understand the customer mindset and what will make them more likely to respond. What potential customers really want to know is, "What's in it for me?" You need to identify user's hot buttons and incorporate that into your marketing (source). When crafting calls to action, the proper message is important. What types of message are more likely to prompt/nudge people to take action? There is a whole science behind the art of persuasion.

Below are ten ways to reach more customers with your content:

1. Prominent Calls to Action.

Focused, prominent calls to action are critical for any commercial website. To an extent, arranging Web content should be similar to how newspapers design their pages. Focus on the ads first and then fit the content around what converts. This is a primary reason why visually impressive design on a site is important, allowing for better conversion.

In addition to design, calls to action also show the value of Web programming. Typically, calls to action may be in the header, sidebar, or end/footer of the content. But sometimes you need to get creative and use smart techniques.

For example, notice how on Neil Patel's Quick Sprout blog, that when you scroll down, the case study from Tech Crunch at the bottom of the right sidebar remains in place no matter how far down you scroll the page. It is a good general rule to never have a portion of your content free from a prominent, compelling call to action.

Neil Patel Case Study for Tech Crunch

However, promoting services is a balancing act. You want your content to provide value to the user without overwhelming them with other messages or services they may not want. But at the same time, you want to convert them into a paying customer.

2. Pop-Ups.

Pop-ups on a website have been historically much reviled and many browsers block pop-ups but there are workarounds. While they can be an annoyance, studies and numbers bear out that pop-ups are effective and for websites using content marketing, they are likely to convert more customers than websites that don't.

Pop-ups don't have to be overly intrusive. You can put pop-ups on a timer so that they only appear after the user has had a chance to make use of the content for a period of time from the Website. An example I like is from Inc. Magazine's website, which has a pop-up that only appears in the bottom left portion of an article once you start scrolling down the page. Inc.'s website also uses more intrusive full screen pop-ups.

3. Case Studies.

Prospective customers may be hesitant. Before they part with their hard-earned money for a service, they want to see a proven track record of results. That is why case studies with stories of how a company's services have benefited others can make such a big difference.

In your case studies, tell a story and use visuals or videos to enhance. Compelling case studies can even be quite sharable on social networks and link worthy, which helps SEO.

4. Testimonials.

Testimonials are similar to case studies, but much shorter. This is where implementing processes and procedures to capture customers' testimonials pays off. In addition to capturing testimonials on your site, businesses should also promote and encourage customers to leave reviews on their Google+ page and other websites such as Yahoo Local, Yelp, Judy's Book, and Angie's List.

Make it easy for your fans to have their voice heard and support you.

5. Email Sign Up.

Since 95% of your website's visitors won't be ready to buy on their first visit, capturing their information to retarget them can really move the needle on sales in the long run. And as Rand so astutely lays out in this Slideshare presentation below, people need a nudge.

Website visitors may be interested in receiving more information and new content via email. This is where the value of an email sign up form comes in to capture contact information and continue to market to them.

Email sign up forms are ubiquitous in the sidebar of blogs and they can also appear as pop-ups. But there are more creative and effective ways of going about getting subscribers. Blue Glass does a good job on their blog of inviting and making the case for users to sign up for their email list to become a Blue Glass "Insider".

6. Feature Contests/Promotions.

Holding contests and giving away prizes can be a great way to keep visitors coming back and convert them into customers. Giveaways and prizes can also be used to drive traffic and keep sales more steady throughout the year. Facebook is a popular medium to hold contests and drive engagement, but there are strict guidelines to follow.

7. Promote Your Social Networks.

Having a strong following on social networks is an important component of the marketing funnel. Social following helps awareness, branding, and promotes trust. Use your website content, contests, and promotions to gain more likes and more social media followers on your networks including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and YouTube.

Even if new social media followers aren't buyers, they can still help augment your social following and some may become brand evangelists helping to spread the word on your product or service. Also, search engines are increasingly using social signals as a component of the SERPs.

8. Trust Badges.

Establishing trust on the Internet is important. People may not have physically been to your business or talked to or met a representative of the company. And there are still too many online scams and people who have been burned with a bad Web experience.& This is where having badges that display trust can help.

In fact, trust badges are big business with companies like Verisign, Comodo, and McAfee and organizations like the BBB generating a lot of income, in part, from the value of their badge. These badges are symbols of trust and can help users feel more assured and make a purchase.

If you are on a budget, social media buttons can serve as trust badges. It shows community, engagement, and a real business doing real things.

9. Easy Contact Form.

Having a contact form or prompt for customers to ask questions and get help is another important element that should be highly visible on a business' Web page. Using a live chat service such as Olark, Zopim, or NGage can help you capture more customers.

People need help.

10. Prominently Display Phone Number.

This may go without saying but as a recent Andrew Shotland column pointed out, not enough small-medium sized businesses are doing this. A business' number should be displayed prominently on each Web page's header and below the content as well.

Conclusion

Compelling, targeted content should be used as a catalyst that sparks a website visitor's interest. But with all the focus on the quality and volume of content, too many are overlooking the business goals of capturing leads and garnering more sales. Instead of focusing on publishing content for search engine rankings or getting links to content, are you doing enough to make it convert and turn visitors into customers?

Create linkable content wrapped in a website aimed at conversion. After all, this is marketing and sales should be the primary goal.
