Gene Switcher to Aid Breast Cancer Treatment | TopNews United ...

A group of Australian researchers has found a genetic switch, which will help researchers come up with novel treatment for breast cancer.

The study, published in the journal PLOS Biology, was carried out by a group of researchers from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Sydney. The researchers affirmed that while studying the topic, they found a molecule known as ELF5.

The molecule has the capacity to turn a particular gene on or off. Lead researcher Chris Ormandy from the institute said the strength of the molecule can be used to treat breast cancer. He said their research is something which they would like to say as an exploration of basic biology of breast cancer.

It was suggested by the study researchers that they can increase the sensitivity of the breast cancer cells to the anti-estrogen drugs. It has been said so, as estrogen plays a vital role in breast cancers and those, who have less estrogen have reduced chances of suffering from the cancer.

"ELF5 determines whether cells will respond to estrogen therapy or not", said the study researchers about the newly found gene switcher. It seems that now new researches to find breast cancer treatments will be done.
