WHY DO WE STILL CALL DRYING TOWELS 'TEA TOWELS'?

Let?s face it, no kitchen is complete without an eclectic assortment of tea towels?.but what on earth have they got to do with tea?? Let?s find out.

The origins of the tea towel date back to the 1800s, when ladies used to clean and dry their delicate pieces of china (tea pots etc) with cloths made of special linen.? Whilst many of these ladies had servants doing other chores in the home, they only trusted themselves to clean and dry their delicate and important china, using their tea towels. ??The ladies also used their tea towels as tea cosies, winding and twisting them around the teapot as insulation. ?

Expensive natural linen was the preferred fabric as it didn?t leave any lint behind and was soft and gentle on their fragile china items.? Nowadays, tea towels are generally made from cotton ? although beautiful linen ones are still highly sought after.?

In fact, modern tea towels speak volumes about their owners.?

For some, only the finest French linen will do ? others are happy with mass produced standard issue, bought from the local supermarket or bedding shop.? Some use theirs until they are threadbare, stained and shabby ? whilst others will only have drying cloths that are colour matched to their kitchen decor.? Some collect and hoard souvenir tea towels, saving some for special occasions, whilst other people will dedicate whole days to shop for new ones (in the same way that others go clothes shopping) and will shriek with delight when they uncover their ?perfect fit? in the manchester department.? Some will even buy theirs from internet sites, adding to their virtual shopping trolleys at the supermarket or even the bedding and manchester stores.

Tea towels have come a long way since the beautiful hand-embroidered fine linen of the 19th century ?.what story do yours tell about you in the 21st century?.
